Rice Faults Past Administrations on Terror
In a time when up is down we know we shouldn't be surprised when we hear things that seem at odds with what we know. Bush and his team were briefed by the Clinton team as they walked out the door. We know that Clinton had already tried to kill Osama bin Laden, or at least tried to make it look like something was being done. Although there are many facts that show that Clinton let him get away more than once.
But now National Security Adviser, Condoleezza Rice, wants to blame past administrations. I'm pretty sure she isn't talking about anything before 1992 either, even though _those_ administrations have many more links to terror in Afghanistan than anyone likes to talk about. Isn't it amazing what you can do as the Director of the CIA?
Even though her talk is tough on "past administrations," the Times points out what is a glaring fact.
Ms. Rice's comments make no reference to what the Bush administration itself did between Mr. Bush's inauguration on Jan. 20, 2001, and the Sept. 11 attacks.
Which was absolutely, positively nothing. Even though they had been warned by Clinton, President Bush didn't need to concern himself with the goings on of the world. Funny how it almost consumes his every waking moment now.
But Mr. Bush himself made little reference to the threat of Al Qaeda, the need to topple the Taliban or other terrorism-related issues prior to the Sept. 11 attacks.
All being said and done, we failed as a country. Going all the way back to the CIA overthrow of the Shah of Iran in 1953 to September 10, 2001. Everyone along that timeline had chances and opportunities to do something. Yet our foreign policy approach failed, spectacularly. But again, we aren't surprised the Bush administration is busy pointing fingers instead of solving problems. It's what they do because nothing is their fault and the buck stops at someone else.
