It's official: dKos 3.0 is a disaster

Sat Jun 25, 2005 at 11:52:33 AM PDT

When I first heard that dKos was going to be redesigned I was excited.  I'm a liberal - I embrace change and I was hoping that several minor issues with the old site would be fixed.

I logged in yesterday to find that the ads were now in the middle of the page, the margins were a barren waste land, the front pagers were screaming, and Kos was now spelled with a l{.  No problem, I thought, changes are bound to involve some disappointment.  I was sure I would get used to it and even learn to love the unique layout.

The disaster below the fold
All was going well, and then I noticed this:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Do you see it?  Look closer:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Still no?  Look at the arrows:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

There it is in Orange and White - The left side is longer then the right, they're not at the same angle and the left side isn't even straight!

I was hoping the new design would be a bold and exciting, but like the title says:  dKos 3.0 is a disaster.

Update [2005-6-25 15:27:13 by sgilman]: Okay, I didn't think anyone could be so picky about something so small(I'd hate to meet some of the people you must run into), but I guess I was wrong. It's satire - and bad satire at that.

You can't say I didn't warn you ahead of time. :

To each their own (4.00 / 9)

I, on the other hand, prefer diaries with no point, satire so bad only the author gets it and links that don't work.

It sucks ass bigtime,  You want militristic?  I'm thinking fragging here.

  •  i'm not as picky as you (4.00 / 3)

it takes time to get the little things right.

But there is NO excuse for having the ad strip smack dab in the middle.  Utter tacky, gives the wrong impression that this site is more about internet real estate than substantive debate.
  •  Good catch. (none / 1)

I'll admit it.. I didn't really notice it.

I'll agree that ads in the middle is bad design.

I could live with that (or subscribe).

However, what I can't allow is the margins.
    That is the one thing.

I'm gonna diary it, just like you did.

i could give a shit.  last night I thought it looked bad.  this morning I actually forgot at first.  who cares about this issue?  is vain and unimportant.  let's be more interested in this little black characters under the uneven banner and what they have to say.
    •  I completely agree (4.00 / 3)

And so does the author of the diary. I think they are being ironic.
      •  I'll come here no matter what it looks like (none / 1)

'cause it's the content I'm after.

I'm more concerned about the f*cking hate speech being spewed, by KKKarl last week and DeLay just last evening ("The trend isn't just about liberal rhetoric, it's about a disturbing liberal psychology," DeLay said. "A bizarre, knee-jerk reflex to assume the world's worst problems are America's fault.")

I'm getting sick of hearing of these assholes as they tear our country apart.

As far as I'm concerned this is hate speech pure and simple and they need to be called out on it, now.

God of what? My wife rules my household. My son rules me. And the day I make any decision without taking your concerns in mind? Holy shit.

This site is already very different, in lots of ways (both big and small) from the original Thursday launch based on your feedback.

Now I wouldn't mind lording it over the Republicans. But that won't happen anytime soon, lol.
        •  Hey You (none / 1)

I heard you for the first time on Air America the other day and although I think all of us here are pretty much on the same page politically and so would expect to agree on most issues, what struck me was not so much what you had to say but rather that you seem like a genuinely nice guy.

And thanks for giving me a place to waste valuable work time doing what I really love. It's much more fun.

  •  I really don't care about those details (4.00 / 3)

I just think, in terms of the broad strokes, that it's a bad design. Everybody screws up - it's only human.

But admitting one's screwups takes courage.

    Also, doesn't the 1.0 , 2.0 , 3.0 , etc. convention generally signify improvements in features and functionality ?
  •  For the Love of that Sweet Man Krishna (4.00 / 2)

    Are you fucking kidding me?

It's a freaking site design.  I don't mean to single you out, but this is by far the most ludicrous entry about the new design.  The sides of the logo aren't straight?  Well shit fire!  PowerLine, here I come.

Now paint with the stupid brush, but I don't come to dKos to get award winning design.  Personally- I think that this new design is quite nice.  It's different and there are some kinks, but that's how the internet works.  I don't see Kos switching to Neo-Con.  I don't see Armando screaming to send all dissenters to the Gulag.

It's freaking packaging, people.  Have we become such sheep that we are willing to rant and rave and take up bandwidth over a silly discrepancy in the angles on the logo?  Christ on the Cross.

Would you not take a vitamin just because the packaging doesn't meet your aesthetic?  Geez Louise; this is so innane.  Please find something substantive to post about.

Man- people go balistic over focusing on Rove instead of the DSM.  Then we spend a day harping about how the site design is a "disaster"?  It's a work in progress and you can still read most of the articles, right?  Seems to me that being able to read a weblog, no matter how bright the orange is, means that weblog is a success.  IF you want design triumph- how about this?

Go to a site devoted to design.  Leave the news and substantive thought to sites devoted to changing the nation.

            •  Bitchfest received. (none / 0)

Pardon my bitching and moaning, but I loved this site, and a big part of the reason was that it was USER FUCKING FRIENDLY.

That is most definitely NOT the case any longer. It is PAINFUL to read, it is UGLY, the margins are a FROZEN TUNDRA of BLINDING WHITE, the comments sectionis a fucking INCH wide, the comments text box drifts to the right without giving me the option to even horizontally scroll, so I have to go on FAITH that I'm not making typos... In summary, what was once the most professional and user friendly sit on the Internet has been reduced to amateurish "do it yourself" blogspot SHIT.

I'm as much a member of this community as anyone else, and I feel like my home has been redecorated by evil fucking PRESCHOOLERS from hell.

So pardon me if I continue to bitch about it. What once felt like a haven from the madness has begun to EMBODY the madness, visually speaking.

I will NOT stop bitching about it. Kos will have to fucking BAN me.

              •  Configuration (none / 0)

I suggest you take a good long look at your browser configuration.  I use three different computers to access this site.  All three are Macs and all three have the same OS version and browser version.  Particularly when it comes to things like margins.  Older browsers will use a different standard.  At the least I'd update my browser or OS, if possible.  A lot of the "bugs" are things that Kos can't fix.  Since I work in tech support I see this all of the time.  There is a common misconception that all formating irregularities stem from the person posting the original content.  This simply is not true.  If you are having problems and other people aren't--I'm not--then I suggest taking a good long look at your OS, your browser and any other possible configurations that you can change. :;shrugs::  There comes a point where it's no longer the web master's problem and where he can't fix it.  Margins are easily one of those things.

  •  Doesn't one... (4.00 / 6)

... testicle always hang lower than the other?
  •  Strange proscenium altogether (4.00 / 2)

Has Kos explained what the tabby-looking gewgaws around the new logo are supposed to evoke, anyway?

That top right curtain-swag/epaulet thing sorta looks like a T-shirt hanging from a clothesline strung from a window upstairs, and the angled edges around the flag-filled banner are reminiscent of a paper engineering project-in-progress.  (Where's Tab A?  Where's Slot B?  Who left the box half-assembled?)

In combination, the whole top banner is a mighty strange (forgive the expression) frame. Color me puzzled.  What's the theory?
  •  Your diary is a joke, right? (4.00 / 2)

  •  On top of that (none / 0)

It's just so flat.  You have an intersting and engaging logo graphic (which was better before btw) that merges into this horrible solid block of orange that doesn't even match the orange in the logo itself.  The whole right side is like that.
  •  You guys are kidding, right? (none / 1)

Personally, I find the left column (no irony there, I'm sure) far easier to read than the old format, the right column serviceable and the center column wallpaper.  Bottom line:  for me it's a significant improvement.

bug me too - it looks sloppy and amateurish.

The strip mall of ads down the middle is beyond tacky. I never minded the ads before, but I've now subscribed for a month ($4.00) while Kos decides what to do about it. It makes a HUGE difference, but for those who are coming here for the first time to see what the Daily Kos is all about - I think it's embarrassing.

The one color thing I like - the grey text boxes don't look like interlopers anymore because they have the grey margins to talk to.

Overall dKos has "glossied up" and "info'd down".  At first glance, The Nation has become People.  The narrower main article column and more insistent graphic puts way more emphasis on whatever happens to be on top.

Yeah, it's more "powerful" graphically but it's way too "hot" and argumentative, rather than its formerly cooler, but more crisp and authoritative, mein.

(And as for details, what is it with the Cyrillic "K".  Why not just add a Red Star?)

screwed up. Comments are posting two abreast in some places - has that happened frequently? And some of the ads are covering the comments - is that a Firefox thing? I think the design is garrish but if that's what Kos wants, fine with me. I haven't paid much attention to the complaints but there seem to be some real technical issues. •  state of the nation (none / 0)

Seriously, the uneven state of the nation graphic was the first thing I noticed!  I decided being an exalted person like Zeldman, no one would criticize  him and he felt he didn't need to take the time to make it right.  I have spent weeks trying to get a little corner perfect.

It's certainly not Kos's fault.  It's a designer who doesn't care.  You know he noticed!

But, I also decided it was not important to me.

And, seriously again, I like the site.  I have no problem with it whatsoever and I like the colors.
  •  You haven't met me, yet (none / 1)

I can be extremely picky when it comes to stuff like this. I'm a marketer, and I'm very design-driven.  If I love the design of something, like the iPod or one of the sleek little white Apple laptops, or a Mini Cooper, or an Audi TT, I covet it. I crave to own one. Superior design does that. Superior design elevates a good product to a great product.  In a world where we usually have so many options amongst competing products, good design can mean the difference between success and failure.

On the flip side, if I dislike something's design, I dislike the product. Think Porsche Cayenne. What were they thinking????  Bad design all-too-often means a bad product.  So bad design is a really important signal as to quality.

With any redesign of a website, even a good redesign, there's an adjustment period. People become accustomed to finding things in certain places, and they get frustrated if they have to look somewhere else.  They get accustomed to having things work a certain way. They get really upset if a feature they use and like gets dropped.  After a few days or so of usage, they become more familiar with the new design and features, and they actually forget how it used to work.  Can you remember Microsoft Word 2.0?  Or the early Macintosh operating system?

So in the first few days, yes, there will be outrage. There will be outrage even with a superior redesign, just because it takes a while to become familiar with it. But the problems with the appearance of the site on widescreen laptops, where the ads actually cover up the diaries and comments -- that's poor design.

    •  asdf (none / 0)

I agree that the comments being covered by the ads is awful but Kos has said they are working on it.  I had never thought about widescreen laptops - the grey margins must take up half the screen.  Have you mentioned this to Kos in the bug threads?

But are you so picky that you would call the whole design a disaster because of the mistake I pointed out?  The complaints have been coming fast and furious, I was just trying to lighten the mood.

      •  I haven't complained (none / 0)

Luckily for me, I was out of town for the debut of the new design, so there were hundreds of comments already. My 2 cents' worth wasn't needed.

I wouldn't necessarily call the redesign a disaster. I would say, however, that it would have benefitted from greater testing.  There's a tendency in the computer industry to test new products on the customers by dumping the product in the marketplace.  That approach would never fly in consumer packaged goods, which is my background. Could you imagine Coca-Cola just dumping a new product or new packaging on the market without having done extensive testing beforehand?  There's a reason why every time you open a 12-oz can of Coke, there are 12 ounces of Coke in it, rather than 4 ounces of Coke, or 12 ounces of Dr. Pepper.

And anyway, of course this crowd will complain to high heaven! This website is all about complaining -- about Bush and the conservatives!

  •  And walk in my shoes (4.00 / 2)

And another thing, related specifically to the computer industry, where piss-poor product quality is the norm, not the exception. I think every web designer and software programmer should have to test their products using 5-year old, underpowered computers, using a dialup modem.  They need to walk in their customers' shoes, if they want to start making better products.
