CHIMPEACHMENT?

Thu Jun 30, 2005 at 06:38:43 PM PDT

Should we go for Chimpeachment or not?

To chimpeach or not to chimpeach?  That is the question.

Obviously, there's a huge buzz about this these days, seemingly incited by the recent Zogby poll.

[Sidenote: if we really want to influence the media, we ought to start an ostensibly neutral polling organisation.  It's not about the results: the power comes from the ability to choose the questions.  This Zogby poll is a nice example.]

The liberal talkshow host Ed Schultz is incredibly against it.  There are some pretty strong views.  What are the pros and cons?  I even heard Olbermann discussing it.

Would chimpeachment cause too much of a backlash, making us look like whiners?

Tale the poll (which is the main point of this diary, afterall).

  •  Another example of repugs evil brilliance. (none / 0)

They try to impeach Clinton for getting something they could only get if they paid for it and now impeachment for legitimate crimes & misdemeanors comes across as either same-old same-old political white noise or petty revenge.

The strategy: convince the dumb that the trumped up or meaningless "crime" committed by a Dem is the equivalent of raping bambi, all while sickening the rest to the point that they simply tune out.  That way, when they commit truly audacious crimes most of the population sees it as politics as usual when the Dems go after them or out-and-out slander.  Gotta gime them credit for having such balls.

  •  No Blowjob, No Chimpeachment (none / 0)

Bush merely started an illegal war to steal another country's oil, make war profits for his cronies, and kill tens of thousands of innocent people to prove America can kick some serious ass when we're pissed. All of this while kicking backs billions in tax revenue to his campaign contributors. Nothing chimpeachable there.

  •  It worked for the GOP? (4.00 / 2)

    When?

Surely you're not talking about 1998.

Yeah, they succeeded in passing articles of impeachment.

But they suffered a huge backlash, suffered losses in Congress, and were generally thought of as idiots and morons (except by their base: the idiots and morons - but I kid).

Seriously - a Phyrric Victory at best.

As for your poll, I express no opinion, except this:  we shouldn't do it unless it's going to work.  And that will require bipartisan support.  And that's not going to happen.  So, until then, we should continue to conduct our investigations and reveal the administration for the thugs they are, and then reap the electoral benefits at the polls.

Impeachment is not whining if there is a legitimate reason.  So why be so chicken about what republicans think?  That bunch of dolts can think anything they like.
  •  It's not the same as Clinton, (4.00 / 3)

as others here have pointed out; Clinton got blown -- Bush sucks.

  •  IMHO too early to push for impeachment. (4.00 / 2)

I think we must continue to pound on the lying, the fraud, and the incompetence. It is working. While driving 550 miles today, I heard about the latest Zogby poll in which I believe 42% said we should consider impeachment charges against George W. Bush for lying about the reasons for war. We should keep making the case without saying it explicitly--yet. That's my serious answer.

The corporate media are destroying progressive Democrats. The Clintons are destroying the Democratic Party.
