After years of "Al Qeida" and "Bin Laden" and "Zarqawi" and "Hezbollah" being behind every terrorist incident, all of a sudden it's the Syrians? Maybe it's been the Syrians all along and we just missed it? Maybe it's not the Syrians but our intelligence sucks so bad we believe what we're told? Or maybe it's not them at all,
and we know it, but we need them to be the bad guys so we can attack them next?
I'll put a poll below, but I'll go with door number 3 myself. I don't think the Syrians killed Hariri, if only because it was a nano second following the biggest bomb since the end of the civil war that the US and Israelis were saying it was the Syrians. If anything convinced me that it wasn't the Syrians, it was the certainty of Bush and Sharon's assertions that it was before the dust had settled over the ruins of the St George Hotel.
If that is too confusing, look at it this way. A previously unknown terrorist group gets enough high powered explosives and inside knowledge of Hariri's routes and security protocols to target Hariri without anyone else hearing a whisper about it. Sure. In Lebanon. In Beirut.
Syria is torturing extraordinary rendition victims/suspects to our order, pulling its troops from Lebanon by year's end, holding Lebanese elections in the spring, supporting the interim unity government following resignation of the cabinet today, and turning over Saddam's brother to Iraq. Why aren't we embracing them into the brotherhood of civilised nations?
I wouldn't like to accuse any particular government of fomenting or procuring terrorism, or even doing it themselves to get the job done right, but it has been known to happen. And the stakes here are high.
Bushco is losing power and what little credibility they might retain fast. Feith leaves his role promoting false wars in the Pentagon in just a few months. If they are to complete the neocon playbook, they have to go for Syria and Iran in Q2 of this year. To set that up requires justifying attacks, and that required a terrorist incident or two.
My suspicions were supported by the accusations tonight that Syria was behind the most recent nightclub bombing in Israel. Mind you, the Israelis won't say why they think so or produce any evidence. All the other bombings might have been those pesky, disgruntled Palestinians, but this one was Syrian. Uh huh. Sure. Okay.
Syria denied vehemently that it was involved in the Hariri assassination or the Tel Aviv bombing. They would, wouldn't they? But this time, I am inclined to pause and listen because there is something not quite believeable about the Bush/Sharon rush to judgement.
Just seems convenient. I wonder what you all think.
