Conservative Crybabies

Mon Jul 11, 2005 at 09:09:42 AM PDT

Whenever you hear conservative intellectuals complaining about what they hate about liberals and liberal "special interests," they frequently boil it down to two words: "victim mentality." They say that liberals thrive by fostering a victim mentality amongst racial minorities, women, gays and lesbians, and the poor. But really, it's the conservatives who absolutely adore victimhood.

(more on the flip)

Whether you're talking about how it was those poor slaveholders victimized by those pushy northern abolitionists; ex-slaveholders pushed around by "uppity negroes;" white womanhood threatened by "cocaine-crazed negroes;" virtuous business owners threatened by malcontents, anarchists, and "bolsheviks;" smarty-pants New Dealers telling people what to do; "outside agitators" like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Freedom Riders who are making the "negroes" get "uppity" again; "bra-burning libbers" breaking up the social order and forcing women into coed bathrooms; "sodomites" flaunting their "perverted lifestyles," you see how victimized those conservatives feel, and with such little reason. Nowadays, to listen to the Scarboroughs and the Hannitys and the Limbaughs and the Coulters of this world, it's pretty much classic victimization talk, all over again, with the people with the least to complain about cast as victims.

The difference between conservatives and liberals is that when liberals are oppressed, when their rights are threatened, they protest. Conservatives rarely have their rights and freedoms threatened, so they get all riled up when the world as they see it might have to change, whether or not it effects them. They don't care if same sex marriage doesn't hurt them one bit; they just DON'T WANT TO SEE IT. It doesn't threaten their rights, it threatens the way they see the world. And conservatives throughout the years have been able to exploit those feelings and turned them into professional victims, in order to advance conservative and reactionary causes.

So they next time some conservative starts complaining to you about liberals and the "culture of victimhood" tell them that conservative talkers have created the biggest culture of victimhood out there, while also creating REAL victims with their cruel policies.

  •  Word... (none / 0)

They sure do cry a lot!

Don't forget about how much Oreilly cries about the taxes he has to pay.

  •  Right Wing Radio (none / 1)

Right Wing Radio would not exist if the listening audience didn't see themselves as victims. Shammity, Rust, and OLeilly won't ever say it, but they MUST have a listener base that has a victim mentality.

The thrust of RWR is that "the real americans" are constantly under threat from "the liberals", "SCLM", "urban(read non-white)forces", "Hollywood" and ANY percieved threat or admonishment.

To not see yourself as a victim of these "forces" would lead you to simply laugh and turn the dial at the Woe Is Me attitude being spewed forth.

    Conservatives Fear The Changing World
    Liberals Change The World

  •  The difference is (none / 1)

that conservatives see having to share space with others as being "victimized" while liberals only ask for all to have an equal opportunity to occupy spaces that have previously been denied to some.
  •  And (none / 0)

They seem to cry the loudest when they end up on the other side of the exact thing they themselves perpetrate (Rush with drugs, O'Reilly with the harrassment lawsuit, various evangelist scandals, etc).  Probably one of the defining characteristics of a conservative/winger is their utter disregard for the Golden Rule - do unto others as you would have done unto you.
