Don't just do something, sit there! (Action & Poll)

Tue Jul 12, 2005 at 09:55:22 PM PDT

I don't know about y'all, but I am getting BOMBARDED with desperate e-mails from politicians and all kinds organizations to sign petitions, send letters, spread the word--a pretty good indication of how truly f-d up things are these days.

I can't respond to every e-mail (I'd never get away from this damn computer!), so please bear with me in this half-assed attempt to lend a hand. Below the fold are a variety of very worthy causes, any one or more of which you may be interested in. Check 'em out, do yo' thang and tell 'em Juno sent you.

No obligation, no salesman will call, void where prohibited, yadda, yadda, yadda.

From Consumer's Union:
End Drug Company Influence at FDA!

An important measure is coming before the Senate that will go a long way toward ending the influence of the pharmaceutical industry on the physicians and scientists who determine the safety of our medicines... [T]the drug companies and the FDA are working hard to kill it. We need your help now!... Send a letter to your Senators...[Just fill out the form]

From Care USA:
Help CARE and The ONE Campaign in the Fight Against AIDS and Poverty

At the G8 meeting on July 8, President Bush and leaders from the world's richest nations pledged to increase development aid to Africa by $25 billion... The promise of new aid could mean that 9 million more people in Africa's poorest countries will have access to lifesaving AIDS drugs... Please join us as we urge our leaders to turn this historic pledge into meaningful, livesaving programs. [Petition form provided]

From Working Families E-Network (AFL-CIO)
Give Wal-Mart a Lesson from Kids [e-mail only]

Connecticut just fined Wal-Mart for child labor law violations. And in January, Wal-Mart agreed to pay $134,540 after being cited for child labor violations in Connecticut, Arkansas and New Hampshire... Wal-Mart has racked up huge fines for child labor law violations. The rich company reportedly makes children younger than 18 work through their meal breaks, work very late and even work during school hours. Several states have found Wal-Mart workers younger than 18 operating dangerous equipment, such as chain saws, and working in dangerous areas like trash compactors... Let Wal-Mart Hear It from Children! Help your child send a message to Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott to let him know your family won't be buying any back-to-school supplies from
Wal-Mart this year. Mail your child's letter by Aug. 1 to:

From Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group:
Exxpose Exxon

As the world's largest and most profitable oil company, ExxonMobil needs to shed its past as an irresponsible oil company and move forward as a responsible energy company - one committed to more than drilling at any price. Tell CEO Lee Raymond how you feel about ExxonMobil's policies on global warming, the Arctic Refuge, and oil dependence. [Fill out form letter provided]

From Rep. Dennis Kucinich:
Homeward Bound Act Gaining Steam

The Homeward Bound Act, H.J. Res. 55, is a binding Resolution calling for President Bush to announce by the end of 2005 a plan for withdrawal from Iraq that would begin by October 1, 2006. The Bill is intentionally crafted to avoid partisan finger-pointing and recriminations... Please act now in support of this bill. Action items and contacts are here.

From Rep. Louise M. Slaughter:
Send Karl Rove His Pink Slip

It is time to hold the President accountable. He made a promise to the American people that he'd fire whoever leaked the identity of Valerie Plame, an undercover CIA agent. Now that we know the leaker was, at least in part, Karl Rove; it is time for the President to keep his word. We are sending along our own pink slips to Karl Rove because the President refuses to do it himself. If the White House ends up knee deep in pink paper, perhaps the President will finally give Mr. Rove the legitimate pink slip he so greatly deserves. Putting the life of an undercover CIA agent in jeopardy cannot be tolerated. Mr. Rove clearly deserves his pink slip, and we're going to give it to him. [Pink slip/form provided; you've probably seen this before, but it's just TOO good not to repeat]

Pick your poison. Good luck and...

  •  Out of the office (4.00 / 2)

No tips needed or sought. Just take a few minutes to (1) respond to at least one of the appeals, (2) write a comment about which one you chose and/or how you feel about it (or whatever you want, I'm not the comment police, and (3), if you feel this is worth it, please recommend for the benefit of others.

Done for the day. Over and (hopefully soon to be) OUT.

  •  Hopefully people will recommend this. (none / 1)

It would be a great chance for people to act on a variety of issues.
  •  Get so many e-mails requesting (none / 0)

whatever, that I always wound up changing email addresses!  I swear I've got at least 4 email addresses that I don't even bother with any more!

  •  Here's another important one (none / 0)

That was a great list of worthwhile causes. Hope you don't mind if I add another critical one that I got by snail mail today. Now that Katherine Harris has entered the race for Bill Nelson's Senate seat, he says that his campaign to keep the seat a Democratic one just got more expensive.

Harris "can count on the extensive resources of the White House . . . she is also a powerful symbol of Republican triumph in 2000. Harris is a hero to most of those donors and they will give multiple contributions to her campaign. She is a national figure and her fundraising will set a new benchmark for a Florida Senate race."

Ugh!!! It would be horrible to have Harris win, especially after what she did in 2000--another slap in the face to us all.

Send any donations to Bill Nelson for US Senate, PO Box 411776, Melbourne, FL 32941-9909. Or use this link.
