For those of you who do not know, Oaji is a town around the Santa Barbara, Buellton area and is great example of how Gerymandered (spelling?) districts can get a little complicated.
The 37th Assembly District is mostly in Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, and Ventura county area but also includes small slivers of Oaji, Santa Paula, and Lancaster (LA County) making it hard for the residents of these areas to ganrner the attention of their officals.
The upside to this is the fact that, because the districts are so "weird", if an elected offical wants to pass legislation for a city (say Oaji) they will have to work with the other members of the other districts represented in that area (this is certianly the case with road and infrastructure repairs).
The problem is that SOME officals are to caught up in their party (cough! Republicans! cough!) to work across the asile (or district) for the good of their district, "sliver" or no.
Obstructionists aside, though, I feel that that forcing members to work with one another is one of the few upsides to having the odd puzzle-shaped districts both here in CA and elsewhere in the US.
