OH-02 - Phone bank from home (anywhere!)

Sat Jul 30, 2005 at 10:54:47 AM PDT

Like many of you, I am stuck somewhere in this country where it is not possible for me to get to Ohio to help out on the ground.  I've been reading about Hackett and contributing to his campaign, but there's little else that can be done without physically being there.

Lukily, there IS something you can do - you can phone bank from wherever you are.

More on the flip...

UPDATE: I've sent out about 250 pages, 1500 phone numbers. Keep em coming, folks!

UPDATE 2: We did too well! The campaign has asked us to stop making phone calls on this list and instead to help out in other ways. See this diary from the Hackett campaign HQ for how you can help. Please recommend that diary.

  •  Please help! (4.00 / 11)

In a low-turnout election like this, turning out the base is everything.  These phone calls are not to convince people to vote for Paul Hackett.  They are phone calls to known Democrats / Kerry voters who we are reminding to go to the polls on Tuesday, and giving them information about how to do so.

It is very easy to make these phone calls, and it is phone banking and going door-to-door that will put Hackett over the top on Tuesday.

    •  Hook me up (4.00 / 6)

Hook me up with about 50 numbers, Fran...and when I am done with those, I might ask for a few more.

    •  I'll take 24 (4 pages) (none / 0)

Is there a script?? I'm in WA and my knowledge of Ohio and this campaign is relatively thin - except he sounds like what we need and Schmitt sounds like what we don't need more of.
I see my user ID is 55550 - am I too new for you?

    •  Does the campaign know about this (none / 0)

and think it's ok?  Otherwise I'm very uncomfortable with it.  I've always treated private phone numbers as very confidential.  I'm not keen on seeing them handed out at semi-random through a huge web site like this.

      •  the campaign knows (none / 0)

I've spoken to a couple people at the campaign who know that I'm doing this (and are quite happy that I am, actually), and I've also spoken to people at Hamilton County Dems, which is where this list came from originally.  If you're not comfortable making phone calls to strangers, that's perfectly ok.  Phone-banking is not for everyone.

Also, I'm pretty sure that most if not all of the phone numbers we are calling are available publically through County Clerk or Secretary of States offices.  The reason this list is so valuable is that the Democratic Party in the area has gone through all those names and determined which ones are Democratic voters and such.

    •  I got 500 (4.00 / 2)

      and am keeping them.

I started calling yesterday from a list provided by CT Citizens. I have recieved very good responce on the first 100, even arraighed for one elderly lady to get assistance from Hackett headquarters.

If she is working from the same master list it is registered Democratic votors. I've only had one truly negative responce so far.

Are you co-ordinating tgis with CT Citizens?

      •  CT Citizens (4.00 / 2)

I don't think this is the same thing as the CT Citizens phone banking.  This list is of Hamilton County Democrats, and I got it through a contact at Generation DFA.

PS - "Fran" is short for Francisco.  Common mistake, no offense taken :)

        •  Maybe you should call. (4.00 / 2)

We need to make an attempt to spead the message as far as possible and that requires co-ordination of our efforts.

    Thanks for doing this.
  •  One more quick (4.00 / 4)

thing to do by way of a "check," make sure that you do a google on the person's name.

Will email you later, not sure if I will have much time, but will try to start with a list of about 50 (and will send an email out to my local Dean Group to see if I get any takers as well.)

  •  be very polite and careful (4.00 / 8)

when Calling...I called many people in Battleground/Swing states for Kerry for months...The last 3 days of calls I got so many pissed off people. They felt harrassed and some even told me to take there name off the list because they were not only getting several calls a day but also they had several people a day knocking on their doors. Although with Kerry it had been going on for months and when we were down to the last 3 days many people had had it. Just be kind and dipolmatic when calling. If there is any recent or updated great news to spread on Hackett that would be a good introduction. Good luck and thanks for posting this Fran.

    It's Obamazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

  •  I can make calls (4.00 / 6)

I grew up in Middletown (just outside the district) and my dad's family all came from Batavia, so I know the district a bit.  I'm in Ithaca, NY now.

Thanks for doing this - I was feeling guilty about not going down.

  •  I hope the list is... (4.00 / 5)

Screened in away that the people are able to call the Democrats to get out and vote as opposed to trying to convince Reps to switch. Cause, both sides are calling everyone and you might piss off a Rep who wasnt going to vote to vote.

We need Dems to get to the polls!

  •  Let's get this diary on the recommended list, (4.00 / 4)

so that as many people as possible see it.
    Recommend!
  •  hook me up (4.00 / 5)

20, please, for starters. I'm waiting on a list from another source, too, but he hasn't delivered for me yet.
  •  I would like to do this and was wondering if (4.00 / 4)

it was possible. I live in Munich but I made phone calls last year from here for the general election. I don't know what my user ID number is. How can I find that out?
  •  I hope (4.00 / 3)

You are being careful to make sure people aren't being called multiple times.
That tends to upset them and might even discourage them from voting.

Is the person who has this list associated with the Hackett campaign?

  •  i can pitch in a little (4.00 / 5)

i can give you some help, gimme one page of it i suppose
  •  virtual phone bank (4.00 / 8)

    I'll be emailing you now.

You should also update your instructions to let people not to call from a work phone; FEC would require that to be reported as an in-kind contribution from the business.

  •  Use your weekend minutes (4.00 / 7)

This is a great use for your cell phone's free weekend minutes.

And you may want to use the caller ID blocking code before making the call so that the people you call don't see your number show up, just for the sake of your own privacy (and so they don't see an out-of-state area code).  Check with your wireless company to find out what their code is.

    •  A note on caller ID block (4.00 / 2)

Lots of people, myself included, auto-block or manually screen calls from caller-ID-blocked numbers.

Oddly, three out of the first four calls I made from this list were that way.

Despair? I can deal with despair. It's the hope that's killing me.

      •  personally (none / 0)

I would rather just briefly explain why I called from a neighboring state, than get involved in concealing that.

Shout out to San Jose lady - not everybody comes up on Google! (I don't and I've tried.)

        •  privatewl meant you might want to UNblock (none / 0)

your cell phone number so it will go through.  Some people have an automatic block if you have this Hidden Caller ID feature turned on and they cannot see the number calling them.

Might want to switch off the "Hide ID" on My Caller ID to make these calls, then turn it back on when finished.

  •  I'll commit to 3 or 4 pages. (4.00 / 5)

I'm next door in MI and was torn during the general about going to OH or staying here.  In the end I stayed here, in retrospect I wish I would've gone.  This gives me a chance to make up for that!

    Thanks for doing this Fran.

  •  Lucky for you sugarbeet- (4.00 / 6)

I have tomorrow off and free weekend minutes and I work a call center job so I have zee mad phone skills.

Oh- and I presume my comment history shows me as avidly not a Republican.  Hook me up with 30 names and I'll make thirty phone calls.

I've actually been really wanting something like this.  I've been following this election closely, but I live in Austin, Texas so other than money (of which I currently have little) there is little else I can do.

So send me 30 of them bad boys and I'll hit you up tomorrow for more if I get through with this batch. :)

I think I can handle 60 for starters, and my UID is plenty low enough, I'm sure.

A quick scan of my posts should reveal that I'm dull and rather whitebread, yet somehow still not a Republican.

Thanks a million for doing this -- I donated but it just didn't feel like enough.

  •  Low cost long distance (4.00 / 3)

download skype.  www.skype.com  Calls are 2 cents per minute from anywhere in the US.  If you have a microphone and speakers, or better yet a headset with both, you can use Skype to call any phone number.  The sound quality is excellent, better than regular phone lines, no lag.  Easy to install and use.

    •  Almost Forgot (4.00 / 2)

Yes, you'll need a credit card too.  You can get about 500 minutes for about 10-12 dollars (paid in $10 euros).  The software is highly reputable and not a scam.  People in europe are using it like crazy.

Um.. you also need a broadband connection for best results, but it will work on dial-up.  I haven't tried it on dial-up though, but for example, regular phone lines cannot use more than 53kbit of data, which is dial-up, when they convert a voice to digital.

from the Hackett campaign, the DNC or the DCCC?  If not, I'd be careful of overlap, and also make sure the script has been vetted for message by the campaign; what might seem like being helpful might hurt their overall strategy, and it is, after all, their campaign.  Not to be a buzzkill (this worked great when the Kerry campaign did it to give non-battlegrounds something to do and take the load off the rest of us), just want to make sure it fits in with the campaign's plan.  Good luck!

    •  that's ok, just take it easy (none / 0)

Early in 2004 there was a special election like this in the 6th district of Kentucky (which is close to Hackett's district). The Republican member got elected governor (Fletcher) and the Dem loser, Ben Chandler, ran for his vacated seat against a female state legislator picked by Mitch McConnell.

Mitch said that the day Chandler announced would be his best day. But close to the time of the election, Dem party volunteers, about 500 of them, descended on Central KY. (The party had already put up money for Chandler's campaign).

It seemed like overkill, but in fact it's just really hard to get special election turnout to even get to 20%. It's not like a regular campaign. I thought people would be 'hacked off' :-) but in the end they weren't; enough showed up to give Chandler the win going away.

I mean, do be nice to the people getting called, you all...but keep calling

  •  Is Sunday night okay? (none / 0)

    Francisco,

I have family stuff to attend to during the day Sunday -- birthday parties and a children's concert -- but would have time to make calls Sunday evening, if that's not too late. Can't make calls Monday night b/c I'll be on my way to the district to help out on election day. :-)

I just sent you an email saying the same. (I think you'll find my comment history acceptable '-)

I have one concern, somewhat softened by my sampling of the comments on this thread: I don't want to call people who have already been called or had their door knocked on many times and risk pissing them off.  I had that experience in Iowa calling and canvassing for Dean.  So if you're getting any negative feedback at this point, I would not want to risk exacerbating that.  If people are still happy to hear from us, then please send me c. 25 names to start with.  If I can take more in the limited time I have on Sunday evening, I'll email for more.

that's about 25 to start with then I'll report back for more.  I'll be using card I bought at Costco so <.03/min but a pain to use. don't have one of them new fangled cell phones.

I can work most of Sunday, Mon and Tues. Be sure to let me know who to call if someone needs a ride.

Do you know anyone at Hack's headquarters?  I have experience in polling and could do a q&d poll IF someone could help me get a sample from a list of ALL voters.
