Bush's Leisure Retreat

Wed Aug 10, 2005 at 01:36:51 PM PDT

I was watching CNN on Tuesday.  At one point they cut away to the President talking about the supposed nuclear threat from Iran.  I don't remember who the reporter was, but she said something like, "the President is at his ranch in Crawford, Texas -- now they want us to call it the Western White House."  I've heard the term used before -- and not just with this President.  Wikipedia gives examples as early as Franklin D. Roosevelt.  What struck me was that apparently the press had been asked to refer to it as the Western White House.  Then sure enough, when the video feed came up, the President was standing in front of an official-looking seal of the Western White House.  You can just see it in this picture at Yahoo.  Personally, I think the phrase "leisure retreat" is more appropriate.

<more after the fold...>

There's been a lot of talk about framing recently.  I can see exactly why the administration wants to frame Bush's vacations as trips to the "Western White House".  He's currently on the longest Presidential vacation in at least 35 years.  This month he'll surpass Reagan's astonishing two-term total of 335 days at the ranch, and Bush has only been in office for four and a half years.  The Bush staff and handlers clearly think he's isolating himself and spending too much time away from the office -- why else would they be pushing for the reframing?  "Leisure retreat" is more accurate and has a better ring to it.

What really irks me about the President's language is that the real White House is owned and paid for by the taxpayers of this great country.  It's a symbol of a government by the people and for the people.  Bush's estate is private property that's a symbol of isolation and privilege.  Don't let him hijack our national heritage -- refer to his Crawford vacation home as his leisure retreat.

The word "leisure" implies carefree relaxation, even laziness.  Bush is a man of leisure whose future was bought and paid for by his family's money.  He's a member of the leisure class -- the ultra-rich elite who have no idea what a working class life is like.  "Retreat" is just as appropriate.  He's running away from responsibility, shirking his duties and afraid of the consequences of his actions.  Why does our war President spend so much time retreating?

Anyone can play the reframing game.  Let's never invoke the administration's positive frame by referring to the Crawford ranch as the "Western White House".  Instead say, "Bush is off vacationing again at his leisure retreat in Texas".

  •  President Nero (none / 1)

    Make it simpler.

Bush fiddles (err, clears brush) while Iraq burns.

    Or

    Bush whittles while Iraq burns.

  •  Retreating is for cowards! n/t (none / 1)

  •  Is the Crawford place even white? (4.00 / 3)

Maybe it should be referred to as "The Brown House", or "The Blue house".  Doesn't seem to make much sense to call it white, if it isn't.

How about "The Blight House"?  That's what this guy is on our country.

  •  Bush goes back to his home (none / 0)

in Texas to remind Southerners and Westerners he's "one of them" while he poses for photo-ops cutting brush over and over again.

    •  Absolutely (none / 1)

      It's an excellent photo-op.

That's all this latest vacation has been is a photo-op.  He swings by New Mexico to sign the energy bill at the solar complex.  Now today he heads up to Illinois to sign the highway bill in Denny Hastert's district.

Nothing says pork like Denny Hastert.

    •  I have some cousins who ranch in Texas (none / 1)

and they have real ranches, not just 1,700 acres of brush and wood. They have cattle, horses, and other livestock. One of my cousins has milk goats on her and her husband's ranch, he has about 1500 cattle. Boy George doesn't have a working ranch, and is not considered a real rancher by those that do. I believe the phrase is "All hat and no cattle.." Sort of describes the state of his intellect as well..LOL

  •  taking a break (none / 1)

I heard a news report today on the radio (I think it was a news break on my local Air America Radio station) and they said he was "taking a break from his vacation" to sign the Transportation Bill. Taking a break from vacation? That'd be vacation2, wouldn't it?
  •  Maybe.. (none / 0)

this guy had the right idea about a Western White House.
    •  Teddy (none / 0)

Teddy Roosevelt was probably the last good Republican.

And you know he wasn't just heading out west for the photo-ops.

      •  Eisenhower had some good points... (none / 0)

This quote is one of his better moments:

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children....This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from an iron cross.
        •  True (none / 0)

And, of course,  there's also this from Eisenhower:

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

So I guess I stand corrected.  But I still like Teddy better.  ;)

  •  The Crawford Compound (none / 1)

    There ain't no ranch there.
    •  No Ranch (none / 0)

You're right.  That's another part of Bush's frame that I wasn't catching consciously.  There ain't no ranch there.  If there was, he'd be a rancher and he ain't.

Calling it a "ranch" gives the impression that he actually works there not to mention it encourages real ranchers or those who admire ranchers to feel a comaraderie with him.

"Compound" is a much better choice.  Nutjobs, druglords and third world dictators have compounds.  They're armed to the teeth and unspeakable atrocities occur within compounds.  Certainly another good frame for the Bush Leisure Retreat.
