"Our kind of people"

Thu Aug 25, 2005 at 09:57:33 PM PDT

Soon or late, after hundreds more deaths or after thousands, leaving an Islamic state, or a state of civil war, the US will, eventually, draw down the number of troops in Iraq.

And when it does it will be perceived by everyone worldwide (except, apparently, Republicans) as a serious defeat for the United States.

And why will we have been defeated?

all will be answered after the jump

Will we be defeated because people like you and I have been predicting it before ever we crossed the border into the Iraqi desert?

Because the French wouldn't participate in Bush's folly?

Because the MSM always ignore the "good things" we're doing in Iraq?

Because of ANYTHING any liberal or progressive does?

Because of ANYTHING that ANYONE who opposes this war does?

I think not.

We will be defeated because those who most support this war, who most benefit from the potential spoils of war, refuse to fight it.

From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (and thanks to DCMediaGirl for the heads up on the article):

Staff Sgt. Jason Rivera, 26, a Marine recruiter in Pittsburgh, went to the home of a high school student who had expressed interest in joining the Marine Reserve to talk to his parents.

It was a large home in a well-to-do suburb north of the city. Two American flags adorned the yard. The prospect's mom greeted him wearing an American flag T-shirt.

"I want you to know we support you," she gushed.

Rivera soon reached the limits of her support.

"Military service isn't for our son. It isn't for our kind of people," she told him.  [Emphasis mine-CK]

Ah yes, "our kind of people". The kind of people with yellow ribbons on their Hummers. The kind of people who love BushCorpTM tax cuts, but don't give a fig for cutting veterans' disability benefits. The kind of people who don't care how many poor, brown Americans go down, so long as their Halliburton stock goes up. The kind of people who support the war, as long as they don't have to pay for it, or suffer for it. The kind of people who would neither stand up against needless war, nor make the sacrafices needed to have even a chance of winning it.

"Our kind of people".  George Bush's kind of people.  That's who'll be to blame for our defeat.

  •  and now the tears.... (4.00 / 3)

as my son trains in the marines at Camp Geiger, to do what?
Ensure they can buy a new H3 next year from their Hali dividends check?
Make sure their son gets to stay home and go to a nice, Ive League college?
Let their son brag in 20 years, while running for pol office, that he wanted to join the military, but his mommy wouldn't let him?

I was completely against my son joining the military right now. Not because I am not a patriot, but BECAUSE I am a patriot. To serve under Bush is much like joining an ill-formed militia, you will be told that someone is bad, without merit or fact, and sent to kill them and destroy their land. But I would never, ever, want my son to stay here only because I thought his life was MORE precious than theirs. All of these boys and girls over there are precious to me, they all need our support, and that means we MUST find Dem leaders that will stand up and say " Enough tyranny, bring them home"

We'll bring them all home.  We just have to fight as hard and as smart to stop this madness in this country as all our sons and daughters, all our brothers and sisters in the military have to over there.  We can do it.
    •  My son is 11 years old... (4.00 / 2)

Someday, he may be called upon to defend our country with his life.  That's part of the cost of citizenship.  But I'll be damned if I would stand by and see him sent halfway around the world on some halfbaked adventure only to come home in a plastic bag.  I'd tackle him before I'd let him walk into a recruiting office today.

Yes, in fact, I do drive a Volvo.

  •  Bless you both (none / 0)

I can't decide which angers me most, the chickenhawks who so easily countenance spilling the blood of other people's children, or their leaders who so easily abuse the honor and patriotism of such fine young men and women.
  •  This war is (none / 0)

    for NO kind of people.

Where are Michael Moore's camera folks when you need them?

Meanwhile, the Quakers (Society of Friends, American Friends Service Committee) do work to get people out of military service based on conscience.

And do read online "War is a Racket" by Smedley Butler.
