Crash on the Levee...

Tue Aug 30, 2005 at 08:03:37 AM PDT

...Down in the Flood

The 17th Street Canal levee was breached and massive flooding from Lake Pontchartrain is hitting Bucktown, Carrolton, Lake View, Gentilly and Mid-City. The water is still rising as of this morning and nobody knows when it will stop. At first, many thought New Orleans was spared the worst because the levees held during the actual storm. But the backflow of water into Lake Pontchartrain from the east broke through the levee a day after the storm passed. This might create the "worst case" scenario that many feared as the great "cereal bowl" of New Orleans gets filled up.

  •  Led Zeppelin on top of it too (none / 1)

    Don't forget "When the levee breaks . . ."
    •  Led Zeppelin didn't write the song (4.00 / 3)

It is actually a version of an earlier song by Kansas Joe and Memphis Minnie recorded around 1930 (at least this is the earlist version I have heard).  I recommend it.

By the way, this is not meant to be a criticism.  I started listening to blues by noticing who wrote the songs sung by Led Zeppelin, Cream, Rolling Stones, etc. and found I almost always liked the originial versions better, and think others might be interested in hearing them.  You can find When the Levee breaks on the album "Roots of Rock" on the Yazoo label.  There are other familiar songs on it too.

  •  where (none / 0)

Where are the pumps...In iraq...where are the guard...in iraq...My prayers are with you beautiful New Orleans..
  •  Being simple minded as I am (none / 0)

I would think the national guard, the reserves and the full weight of the US military could be employed to correct the flooding problems.

Yes, I know we are at war in Iraq and other places in the world while our forests burn and our cities flood.

Now then, back to my original statement re the military. Send all available troops, resources, equipment, etc. to the areas that require attention.

If we do not have any or enough military then bring them home. In the mean time have every member of Congress volunteer to help correct the problems. Not by talking it to death, not by passing another useless or porker type of legislation but by actually going there and helping.

    Leaders lead. Politicians talk.

  •  Where is our HOMELAND SECURITY?? (none / 0)

Where the hell is all the planning that was uspposed to take place to protect Americans from disasters? The morons on the right rip up the Constitution and Bill of Rights all in the name of "security." What security? Money that could go to actial security, planning, etc. is going into the pockets of the oil companies, the right wing rich and the bogus BushWara in Iraq.
There has not only been no planning for natural disatsters, they've sent the troops who are supposed to help here (National Guard) to IRaq and Afghanistan.
Thaniks right win for the death, destruction and tax cuts. All of you morons who voted for Bush are responsible for the situation we're in. You don't like taxes unless there's a natural disaster - then you want the Government to bail you out!
Get a clue - taxes fund national security, infrastructure, schools, hospitals, firemen, police. You not only have blood on your hands, you have egg on your face.
Trouble is, the rest of us who have a clue have to keep enduring your crap.
