Intelligent Design - Freep this poll!

Thu Aug 04, 2005 at 05:14:07 PM PDT

This is a pretty blatant push-poll given their biases but even as written I can easily find myself voting "no". Of course my real answer would have been "Of course they should both be taught, but evolution should be taught in science class and intelligent design should be taught in philosophy class". The problem isn't exposing children to different ideas - it's misrepresenting what those ideas actually stand for.

Should students be exposed to different ideas, or should they be shielded from information about intelligent design? Give us your opinion.

  • Yes, students should be exposed to the theory of intelligent design in public schools.
  • No, the theory of evolution is the only theory which should be taught in public schools.

Just for the fun of it, the poll is reproduced below.

Apologies if this has been diaried before but if it has the recent diary search function failed to reveal it to me.

Yeah, I feel that way every time I get one of their emails. The first time I answered one of their polls it put me on their list... and I was going to unsubscribe after I got the first couple and almost hurled, but then I realized it was useful since they tell me which companies have pro-gay policies and I know where to spend my money!

But can you close your <i> tag somewhere?  You've thrown the rest of the diary page (on my browser, anyway) into italics.

I think it deserves the attention.  And while we are duplicating stuff, I will repost this comment I put on the other diary's comment thread:

I just sent them an email about their use of the word theory when talkind about ID.  I stated clearly that it in no way fits the definition of a theory, and provided several definitions from various dictionary sources.

I was tempted to state that I have a "theory" that the sky is made of light blue jell-o because, I mean hey, sometimes it really does look like it.  But I refrained because I knew this would only backfire.

There have been numerous diaries posted here at dKos that people can use as sources of information and I suggest that everyone do a little research on the subject.

May this find you in good health and good spirits, and if you're lucky, under the influence of the latter.

    •  Mmmm, blue jello... (none / 0)

      Yum!

Maybe the search feature is broken. I looked through the most recent diaries visible and then I did a search for "AFA" and "Intelligent Design" and when nothing turned up I decided to just go ahead and post.

  •  All theories... (none / 1)

...should be subject to rigouous scrutiny, and evolution is no different.  But anything presented in science class should have some scientific merit.  The universe may have been created by an act of God, but there is no way to investigate this idea scientifically.  Ergo, it isn't science.

Not that it matters, but the "yes" votes outnumber the "no" votes by a 95-5 margin.

  •  As of 9:00pm EDT Thursday (none / 1)

AFA poll was running about 18k for the teaching of ID and less than 900 against.

  •  Do you approve of Kim Jong-il (none / 1)

as General Secretary of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea?

    * Yes
      No

That poll was about as legitimate as an election in North Korea.  But I guess that's what we should expect in Holy America.

  •  It takes multiple votes (none / 1)

I always try, but this is the first in a long time that it has worked for any poll.

I voted using the name Charles Darwin and a Spamgourmet e-mail address, so I can see if they will really let you off their e-mail list like the fine print says.  If not I will just go to my account at www.spamgourmet.com and set that address so anything sent to it goes into the bit bucket.  This will also let me see who else gets that address.

If you want unlimited disposable addresses for free, I recommend www.spamgourmet.com.  Easy to use and very useful.  You can even correspond with people without giving them your real e-mail, and it looks like it comes from your disposable address.

NOt connected with the folks at Spamgourmet, just love their service.

those 95% think that "students should be exposed to the theory of intelligent design in public schools" in a Comparitive Religions class.

After all, it wouldn't be a strange thing at all to see there.

  •  Noise machine (none / 1)

It's annoying to frequently hear about ID initiatives. Is it really necessary to cover this BS ? Just today NPR had a talk show with an uninformed creationist..oops..ID-ist and some scientists. In any reasonable debate ID is exposed as an anti-scientific crusade, yet at the same time these people are given airtime and their memes spread.

If we close our eyes & ears, will they go away ??
