Ophelia is coming. Will it help/hurt Bush?

Wed Sep 14, 2005 at 02:20:22 PM PDT

CNN's website is headlined w/ the Governor of N. Carolina calling for his residents to evacuate ahead of the storm.

NCarolina evacuation urged

If Ophelia does cause destruction of property and loss of life, Bush is screwed.  Unless....

he can explain a decent response by FEMA  on the fact that Michael Brown is no longer the head.  Can he make that distinction stick?  Because if he can't, it will be widely perceived that the reason N. Carolina is treated better is because 1) it's a Republican state; and 2) has a better class of citizens.

The aftermath is something to watch.

At the moment, I'm more concerned as to whether it hurts my friends in Wrightsville Beach and the Sandhills.

    Looks rougher than I expected.

outside Wilmington. She touched base with me in just the last hour. Said power has been flickering, but was back on at that time (obviously, she emailed me!) And that Wilmington is seeing some serious flooding. They've issued a curfew already.

If FEMA screws up again, Bush is toast.  If FEMA doesn't screw up (which I really, really hope happens, for these poor folks in NC and Virgina), he's toast.  The only thing he can hope for is that Ophelia isn't too terribly bad.  Unfortunately, right now, that doesn't look likely.  Even with just category 1 winds, over a foot of rain is enough to really ruin your day.

really thinking about the impact of this hurricane on Bush though I doubt after the disaster that was Katrina, folks in that state regardless of the fact that its a red state do not really have much confidence in our Federal Government.  I am concerned about a couple of friends that attend UNCW. Last I heard they were on their way to Raleigh so I think things will be okay.

Plus Governor Easley seems to have a clear cut plan to handle this hurricane.
