Censure BushCo: Something Dems can do immediately (+poll)

Sun Sep 04, 2005 at 11:00:26 PM PDT

This is going to be a very short diary...it is actually just an extended comment, but I think the idea warrants a diary and its own Warhol moment.

I have not seen any proposals for the Dems in Congress to censure Bush and his administration for their handling of the aftermath of Katrina.

(continued)

I think censure is a good idea. It isn't politically impossible like impeachment. It is admittedly only a symbolic gesture and won't save lives or help the people displaced by Katrina. Yet it would tell the public that the Dems are no longer Bush's poodles. If the statement of censure ever got to a floor vote (which I doubt), Repubs would have to vote in favor of incompetence in order to support their party.

An article of censure, even if it sits on the shelf without a chance in hell of coming to a vote, is a great place to publically and officially document all the Katrina screw ups of the Bush administration. It would be harder to discuss the article of censure without talking about its specifics, thus cutting into ability of the wingnuts to engage in their typical ad-hominem attacks against anyone who does't worship at the House of Bush.

For obvious reasons, a statement of censure would be far easier for a Senator to introduce than a Congressman. I'm thinking Russ Feingold would probably be the only Dem with the stones to do it.

So how about it? Censure - worth a shot or not ?

  •  I have honestly never understood (none / 0)

the point of censures. They do nothing that a press release wouldn't do. I suppose they sound more official than a press release, but they don't seem to do anything but waste our tax dollars on their debating the censure.

Conyers, Waters, Black Caucus, and any other Progressives like Kucinich.

I'll wait for their decision and recommendations.

Meanwhile, time to go shopping for pitchforks and torches. . . .or at least doll babies to put in coffins at the next public demonstration. . . . accompanied by one of those heartbreaking New Orleans funeral bands.
