Howard Dean is back and talking policy

Fri Sep 09, 2005 at 02:14:29 PM PDT

On CNN with Wolf Blitzer Howard gave everyone hear a reminder of what Democrats should be saying and exactly how they shoulkd be saying it.

Blitzer even played Laura Bush defending her husband and Dean still wouldn't give an inch.

 paraphrasing Dean

"It';s not what you say it what you do and your policies that determine whether you care asbout all the american people and the presidents policies shows he only cares about the top 20%.

I cant wait for the transcript and am begging Crooksandliars.com to put this interview up

  •  He was excellent (none / 0)

    Two important points made:

    1.  Not what you say, its what you do.

    2.  Bush has hurt "bottom 80% of Americans".  This is very important...sadly, people want to believe that they aren't like "them", you know, the poor...they have to understand that BushCo has hurt all of us and will continue to.  Ofcourse, minorities, the poor and the elderly have been hurt disproportionately.
    •  Who are the top 20% and the bottom ... (none / 1)

80%?  Does being filthy rich put you in the "top" category?

My mother, who was divorced, raised my sister and I on a factory worker's salary of only $1 an hour!  (I was born in 1940.)  She always insisted that I remember that:  "There is nobody better than you and you aren't better than anybody."  So concepts like the "top" and "bottom" are foreign to me unless you specifically delineate them as the richest 20% or the population.

In summary: Top and bottom convey good and bad to a lot of us.  Especially if you've been in the "bottom" group financially.

  •  He also said that (4.00 / 3)

From what he has seen so far John Roberts should not be confirmed and gave a very legnthy answer as to why.

NICE TO HAVE YOU BACK AND TO HAVE YOUR BACK HOWARD!!

  •  Dean was on AM760: Boulder's Progressive Talk (none / 1)

    Today.

Go HERE to read and HEAR THE AUDIO of the interview.

It's a great one.  Howard nails it out of the park, as he tends to do.

  •  I don't think Dean was good (4.00 / 2)

or at least, not as good as he could have been.  His responses to the questions regarding the mistakes made by local and state officials in getting people out were crap - he changed the subject and tried to answer a different question, and why try to beat Rumsfeld at his own game?

He had to know this would be asked, and he flubbed it.  I give him a B.  It would be a C, but I was pleased that he stressed economic injustice.

    •  Not great, but fair (none / 0)

True, he botched a few parts and seemed wooden. Not his best appearance but he made a few strong points on the estate tax (could've been better) and the Roberts nomination (though he characterized Roberts a little too starkly, in all honesty).

    •  I don't think he flubbed it at all... (none / 1)

he gave a version that most have been giving from the first day.  It was so clear that it didn't matter who dropped the ball before the catastrophe, only one entity--the federal government--could send massive relief and rescue.

      That is the point.

It's not because Blanco and Nagin are Democrats, it's because it's so damn obvious that a city and state cannot handle a disaster that leaves them immoble underwater.

    •  He spoke the truth (4.00 / 2)

That theres blame for every administration for the last 20 yrs and more. That the governor and Mayor could have done things differently but once the hurricane hit it became the federal governments job to take over and do whatever was neccasary  to ensure the safety of the people.

    •  I disagree, (none / 1)

Yes, he was obviously not fully briefed about the buses but he stayed on message about the post storm screw-ups and made the connection between the aftermath and this failed administration.

      I was pretty pleased.

      •  i was too (none / 0)

I just so wanted him to be completely on.  It was good, for the most part.

I wish he'd just repeat "if you make less than 100k per year, this government doesn't care about you.  If you make less than 50k per year and aren't white, then he really doesn't care about you."  Race and class, race and class.
