I don't often blog about my calls to the "second teir" players on talk radio - usually I limit myself to telling you about the calls I make to O'Falafel, Shammity and the King of all Addicts...

Well, that might change.

flip - I promise I'll get to today's call...

I'm finally going to take the plunge and try to make a job out of this.  You see, I love talk radio - I love the mental agility it requires, the satisfaction I get from besting the blowhards when they have all the advantages (except having the truth on their side), and (I say this sheepishly and with some embarrassment), I love the idea that there are people out there that love listening to and hearing about the calls that I make.

So, after 36 years of toiling at "bread-winning" jobs (computer programmer, technology executive, landlord) that I didn't get that much enjoyment out of at all, at this juncture of my life, I find myself at home raising a daughter while my wife completes her psychiatry residency.  She's pulling down a little less than 40K/year, which, along with our meager rental income, allows us to pay the bills and feed ourselves.  I don't want to sound like a dick, because I know there are millions of people out there less fortunate - I mean, we have her benefits and a really bright future to look forward to...  but...

I want to work too.  So I'm striking out on my own...

So anyway...

I want to call talk radio full time - as a job.  I want to be part of Kos' new left wing echo chamber...  kind of...

Only instead of being a part of a "think tank" or "policy apparatus", I want to do my fighting behind enemy lines - attacking them where they are strongest - on talk radio.

I'm fucking good at it.  I may not be perfect, but generally speaking, you know that if I'm calling a show that I'm prepared and that you are going to hear some fireworks that you might not have heard before.

Case in point:  today's call to Tony Snow.  He went to break saying that 2006 might be a tough year for some republicans - that he'd tell us why when he returned.  Of course I knew he was going to come back to talk about Abramoff, so I called.

He came back from the break, mentioned a little bit about Abramoff and then took my call.  I have to paraphrase, but this is the gist of what was said:

Tony Snow:  We go now to one of my favorite regular callers out of Albany, NY...  Mike, How are you?
Me:  Happy New Year Tony...  You know, Doolittle, Ney, Delay, Conrad Burns - these aren't just republicans - these are republican leaders - scores of them - and when you count the staffers that are caught up in this - well, this is the true "Nuclear option" that's gonna blow up congress...
Tony Snow:  Oh, well, I think Delay will be OK, but you are right...  except to say that there will be a few democrats caught up in this also...  I mean, you will always have guys in politics caught lining their pockets
Me:  Lining their pockets?  You think that's waht this is?  Watch out Tony - the extent of this thing is incredible - I mean, Ney for example...  Abramoff is mobbed up and has a guy whacked down in Florida over a business deal and Ney is doing him favors in Congress to help him out on the same business deal...
Tony Snow:  Oh, c'mon Mike...  let's not get caught up in the black helicoptor stuff - I mean, you used to have people running around Washington talking about how Clinton was connected to 84 murders...
Me:  But that wasn't reported in the Washington Post...  But you know the part that I think is really outrageous?  All of these guys, Doolittle, Ney, Delay - even Abramoff - they all hide behind the altar claiming to be very moral, deeply religious people...  but when you look at the favors they did for Abramoff, when you look at what Abramoff was lobbying for...  well, it's stuff like sweatshop labor in the Marianis Islands and gambling at Indian casinos...
Tony:  Well, Mike, that kind of lobbying is just done in Washington...  if I'm a Congressman and someone calls me about the some obscure isalnds, I know he's getting paid for that and I'm gonna take it with a grain of salt...  but thank you for your call, I'm sure we'll be talking more about this as the year goes on...

So yeah... this is the deal...  check out my previous talk radio diaries - I've provided links to all of them below.  In the last diary I did, I made an appeal for some cash - I want to purchase the Radio Shark - a device that will allow me to record and distribute the calls in mp3 format, and I want to subscribe to Vonage - $25/mos for all the calls I can make from home (I also use my cell when on the road - and since most of the shows are on during peak hours, well, that gets costly sometimes also)...

So anyway, yeah...  I'm looking down the barrel of a gun here...  My wife says that I've got to go get a job, and I don't blame her.  I mean, staying home with the baby girl is a job in itself, but it doesn't pay the bills.  And when I'm racking up calling minutes with the blowhards, well, that's an expense we just can't afford right now...

unless...  unless I was to turn it into something resembling a part time job.

So this is what I want to do:  subscribe to satellite radio...  buy the radio shark.  Successfully call several shows a week.  Record them, podcast them and send them out as MP3's to those who sign up for my email list.

So - what do I need from y'all?  Well, after my last appeal, which didn't get a lot of attention, one generous contributor sent me a check for $50.  It felt good - awesome...  but that isn't enough to sustain the operation... lol...

So what I'm asking is this:  for those of you that can afford to contribute, do it through paypal - the email address to use is  Alternatively, email me at stark~dot~m~at~gmail~dot~com for my snail mail address.

More importantly though - I want to reach out to those of you that might be connected to some progressive funding operations.  I am not looking for a big payday, but if there are any benefactors out there that might be willing to finance the phone and satellite radio bills and the purchase of the radio shark, well, that'd be enough to keep my wife from insisting that I stop the calls...

I know I'm in a weird spot here.  i'm asking y'all to help me make my hobby a job that pays me.  But I guess it isn't much different than bloggers who ask you to visit their sponsors from time to time - their hobby became an income...

I dunno...  I like what I do, it's gotten to the point where it has become less affordable, and I'd love for that to change.  Anyway, here's a convenient list of all my previous DailyKos talk radio calls...  Remember, i've only blogged about half of the calls I've made - I've made scores of calls that I haven't gotten around to blogging or that have been to second teir or local stations...  If I do get interest, I'll blog all of my calls - and...  I'll go one further...

I'll start compiling a list of local radio stations across the country and listening in over the internet.  I'll call local stations so that I can be sure I have somehting to deliver five days a week...  that way, I can get on several shows a day...

Think about it this way...  In Kos' interview with Newsweek, he made a great point:  he mentioned that while the MSM hasn't really made the war a liability for Bush, when kids die in Iraq, their deaths end up in the local papers...  that the cumulative effect of those deaths is starting to have an effect on the country's gestalt with regards to war sentiments...  well, an extra call or two to different radio markets every single day...  I guess it is just more message dissemination.  More echo chamber.

It's something I love doing and it's something y'all love to hear and if I can pull it off, it'd be like having a Kossack with his own radio show (the cumulative calls could have me on the air for an hour a day if everything works out right).

Any questions?  lemme know...

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  What about a Crooks & Liars style blog (3.75)
Where you describe the podcasts and post sound clips of the calls?

You could just start with a free blogspot blog and document the current memes being discussed on right wing radio day to day.

I agree you are very good at this. You are one of the few people on this site who (whom?) I automatically recommend.

    Good luck man!!

  •  Today, I learned so many things (none)
If you had been listening to Tom Hartman on Air America you might have heard him mention that Mohammed Atta was cruising on one of Jack Abramoff's cruise ships just prior to 9/11...I was shocked and dumb founded so I did some searches and low and behold..there are dozens of references to the Atta/Abramoff connection...

Then I learn that DeVos, the ultra right wing founder of AMWAY, contributed to Abramoff which is curious given that he is a founder of the Council for National Policy which was created at the same time as the Federalist Society both financed with seed money from such people as Richard Mellon Scaife and Reverend Sun Myung Moon..Council for National Policy got Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson launched...Falwell with the Moral Majority and Robertson with the 700 Club not to mention Ralph Reed with Robertson who also figures in with Abramoff...

Abramoff was also involved with Ollie North in the funding of the were his cruise ships which the Gambino hit men were hired to off the previous owner..are those ships used in the cocaine trade these days...Terrorist organizations have been financing their operations with drug money for decades and at one time they used BCCI as a bank for their accounts...

I am beginning to think that what is going on here is the biggest worst most outrageous and corrupt criminal enterprise we are ever to lay witness to.  The whole of the Republican Party is a money laundering operation...and to what end??  Black ops??  Did Atta work for this black operation..??  He may not have been on the payroll of the CIA per se..but he certainly could have been on the payroll of privatized CIA...

    •  Well... (none)
I'm gonna have to do some fact checking...

but if this is even partially true...

      •  I found some interesting (4.00)
information on the Atta/Abramoff connection at should study the Council for National Policy and the real agenda of the Federalist the way..Judge Bork was a mentor to the first three founders of the Federalist Society who have used that organization over the past 23 years or so to advance an ultra conservative Federal judiciary and they have just about succeeded...Scaife was a financial backer of the Federalist Society as well as the Council for National Policy...

People like Paul Weyrick are founders of the Council for National Policy along with Sun Myung Moon who has been a close friend of George Herbert Walker Bush since the 1970's when Bush was the head of the CIA and Moon was a member of the Korean CIA..There is so much to learn and so little time..but I do beleive we are in real trouble..I think this year is the year they move to solidify their power completely...if DeLay gets off..that will be an indication that the powers behind the faces we see in government are in support of what their political hacks are doing...they think they can work their way out of this mess through public relations..

    •  To what end you ask? (none)
Money laundering.  I think they saw that Federal Reserve and big dollars and thought "Hey that could be ours. Let's go get it."  I really do.  It has been done before in many countries.  Hey just look at Saddam. That is essentially what he did in Iraq.  Look at many of the Central and South American countries too.  Same thing where a small few basically took over the national banks and lived off the money while the citizens suffered poverty, civil wars, oppression and so on.

We have always thought it couldn't happen here, but why did we think that?  It isn't that hard especially when the citizens have declined to drive the bus and /or are easily distracted by single issue politics and blow jobs.  Really it is easy and as they gain control of the Judiciary which was the last frontier for them it will be much harder for us to restore our democracy.

      •  I agree with you completely (none)
and you have stated it so well...Did you know that George Herbert Walker Bush is the proud owner of gold mines in Africa?? and those diamond mines that Pat Robertson is so fond of in
Zaire or whereever the Hell he has them..these folks are can't be traced nor can gold...also the World Bank now posesses a majority of the world's gold reserves so we should certainly fight any move by right wingers to back the dollar with gold...
  •  n/t (none)

  •  An activist friend and I were talking yesterday (4.00)
and our conversation hinged on the fact that the Right has ammassed millions of dollars to feed to their noise machine -- not just the Hannities and Limbaughs of the world, but also in mobilizing hundreds of young organizers who are quite effective in getting seniors to vote, who organize and reign in lower-level politicians and keep them connected and on-topic through faxed talking points, think tanks and other means of under-the-radar communications.

We on the left, on the other hand, are forced to work our regular jobs, slaving away, and then donating our time on the weekends and in the evenings to go door to door or make phone calls to energize the 'roots.

If I had $10M -- and I hope people like Soros and Peter Lewis are listening -- I would hire 200 young, energetic activists, pay them $50K each, and set one loose in each of the 200 most-republican-controlled House districts to do field work. Organize local DFAs or PDAs to go door-to-door. Create affiliations of small local groups to create larger blocs. Persuade locals to run for Precinct committee positions and oust slackers and corrupt old-school leadership within the Dem party. Organize letter-writing campaigns, and make calls, ala Mike here, to local talk shows and get the progressive message out.

Do that, and you'd have a huge impact on the political landscape.

But no. No one will step forward and finance this. They don't have the balls.

That's why Mike and I have to fucking beg on dKos for people to either send money, or buy a goddamn bumper sticker so we can keep working on making America blue again.

Rush Limbaugh himself earns 25 MILLION dollars every year.

The right wing propaganda machine was built brick by brick at a cost estimated to be 30 BILLION dollars since 1964.  (I can't find a reference for this figure, but I think it is mentioned in the introduction to Lakoff's Don't Think of an Elephant.)

Your point is well taken, btw -- and I do think rich progressives are listening and all progressives are "on it".  But the real strength of the Progressive Movement is in numbers of bodies, not dollars.

An interesting history of the right-wing revolution can be found in this article on Richard Mellon Scaife.

      •  bodies need dollars (none)
you argue that our strength is bodies, not dollars.

But those bodies are scattered to the four winds, and feel ineffective because of the Right's noise machine.

Again, all I need is $10M and one year, and I can bring those bodies together in one solid mass.

Our organizers are our sergeants in our war against the right. If they can't get the privates out of their homes, this war is lost. But we need our sergeants out there and working, unfettered by domestic concerns like the roof over their head or the clothes on their back. If I can pay those "sergeants" and provide a decent living wage -- not the crap $100-$200 a week that most organizations can cough up for a month or two before elections -- then those sergeants are going to work their asses off for our side. I know I'd work 50+ hours a week if I knew I was bringing home enough to pay for my family's needs.

How many other Kossacks would be willing to work 50+ hours a week for a progressive grassroots organization if they were guaranteed $1,000 a week?

        I think I'll diary this...

  •  I second the podcast call (none)
Dude, just go ahead and do your own show. Make it an analysis of certain hated conservative hosts, on a day by day basis, and make your refutations. Then the highlight of each show could be a call from you taking on the blowhards.

I also think the next logical step from dropping bombs on other people's shows is to cobble one together yourself and take on conservative callers from around the country. That'd be sweet.

Podcasting is cheap, only the hosting costs and minor technology costs (like a microphone and some software like Soundtrack Pro to clean the audio signal up for public consumption). You could be up on iTunes this week, baby.

  •  Tony Snow's snowjob show (none)

Well, now I am hooked on your calls. I might have caught one or two but it is rare when someone hands them their ass because they cut off the mic. You have a clever way of doing it! I once read where a guy called a show and pretended to be a right winger and he phrased his opinions and questions in a brilliant way it really stumped the host. he was saying that his liberal friends were saying..blah, blah blah and it was all factual.

Now about Tony Snow, I listen to him "sometimes" and I can't believe what He says! He always gets the things wrong. he talks as if he knows he is bullshitting but can't help it.. He is one of the worst when it comes to facts and that is saying a lot!

Bill:  Oh, come on, Mike...  you don't really believe Michael Moore's propoganda do you?

Me:  Well, no, actually.  I don't have to.  Because Michael put Condi Rice and Colin Powell in his movie.  He showed them saying, in February 2004, that Saddam Hussein was not a threat to the United States.  So I believe Condi and Colin...  but I also wanted to say that I think you really often find yourself lining up with the Ann Coulters of the world when you engage in attacks and try to destroy Michael Moore.  And to the extent you do that, and for Jeremy Glick, I just wanna say SHUT UP!!!!

  •  I have heard you (none)

  •  Try the CSPAN call in shows in the morning (none)
it's a broader range and the politicos listen to them also. They killed Clinton on the call in shows for 8 years. When Bush got ellected they changed the format 3 times.

Under Clinton whoever called got on. Bush took office and at first it was by geographical region. Then it went to DEM, REP, Other. Now it's DEM, Support Bush, Other.

I always call on the Bush line. The house and Senat stuff on Cspan are great, but their call in shows tend to be quite right wing. Check it out an see.
