Unfortunately, I'm one of those idiot Americans who didn't really think about it until it hits a little closer to home. Over the weekend, a friend of mine told me his parents recieved notice that their house and land were to be vacated within two years and they will be paid fair market price for their assets.
Why? Because a private developer wants to put up condos. That is absolute and total bullshit. Kicking out elderly people that had worked their entire lives to buy that home just to appease the rich. It really is true, there isn't anything maney can't buy.
There have been several small bills hinting at taking down Kelo. With the only dem bill I know of being from John Conyers.
Kelo is about the rights of the common man vs the will of big business. I'd like to see dems get on the right side of this issue in a hurry. Amend the 5th ammendment, pass a serious bill challenging it, whatever.
It's great that our dems so far haven't been making shady house deals or participating in money laundering, but I still wish to see more seperation for K Street. The middle and lower classes in this country have been battered by the last 5 years. Coming into '06 we are really watching for dems to step up. Kelo is an oppertunity for dems to score some big points with the people and seperate themsleves from big business.
