Today, King George made this bizarre proclamation:
"In a free society, there's only one check on political speech and that's the judgment of the American people," Bush said. "I ask all Americans to hold their elected leaders to account and demand a debate that brings credit to our democracy, not comfort to our adversaries."
-So unpopular ideas are no longer entitled to free speech protections? That's news to me.
Other odd royal pronouncements below:
The anti-free speech claim is less surprising than some of W's other remarks? Has the King seen the error of his nasty, Rovian ways?
"Compromise and consensus and power-sharing are the only path to national unity and lasting democracy," Bush said in a speech to a gathering of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
And then, showing his new enlightened attitude, the president said:
"successful free societies protect the rights of minorities against the tyranny of the majority."
"A country that divides into factions and dwells on old grievances cannot move forward and risks sliding back into tyranny," Bush said.
But no, he doesn't mean our society. It's only Iraqis who must protect minority rights and share power. Silly me. What was I thinking? For us, it's just more of the same:
"Support for the mission in Iraq should not be a partisan matter." He warned against "irresponsible debate" during campaigning for this fall's congressional elections in the United States, saying Democratic war critics could harm the military mission in Iraq if they engage in partisan criticism and defeatism instead of honest questioning and loyal opposition.
Meaning, of course, if you speak out against BushCo's war, you will be vilified as disloyal.
Yeah. I read it here.
