When the illegal wiretapping of American citizens was first uncovered by former NSA employee Russel Tice, Bush claimed that it was necessary, the law be damned, to conduct the war on terror. He further asserted that he had the authority to engage in covert domestic wiretapping, vaguely citing (i.e. lying about) the military force authorisations passed after September eleventh.
Well, it turns out that like so many things that Bush says, you can't believe a fucking word of it. Truthout.org has today published a story, along with a link to documentary evidence, that shows George W. Bush, shortly after he entered office and long before the 9/11 attacks, authorised the spying in question. That's right- Bush didn't authorise warrantless monitoring and spying as a response to 9/11- he did it because he wanted to.
