Friends, Kossacks, Progressives, lend me your ears;
We come to publish science and trash creationism...
Yes, we want to publish good solid science - the first book of collected Daily Kos diaries- as a fundraiser for Yearly Kos. Written by the eloquent Steven DarkSyde and Devilstower, illustrated by eight individual Kossacks, this book is excellent.
That is not all - Pastor Dan has contributed his wisdom to the book as well. The introduction is by Carl Zimmer, bestselling author of the book At The Water's Edge. World famous paleoartist Carl Buell has donated literally dozens of works of art including some originals.
In short, we have one kickass book. You'll get a sneak preview on the flip.
But there is one problem. We don't have a publisher.
Our Cover Art by the wonderful Karen Wehrstein. The subtitle will be different; this is a draft of cover text.
Well, let me be clearer. The e-book is almost done and is going to be incredible. What we lack is a publisher for the physical book who can give us what we are looking for.
What We Hope To Get From A Publisher::
Hardback and softback books with all illustrations printed in color.
Book format similar to Crashing the Gate. Standard hardback/softback size of 5.5" x 8"
Kosmos Vol 1. in print by start of May
We can do the book in black and white; we have a publisher who will do that for us. But don't you think work like this:
and this:
deserve to be in color?
So our plea to the entire Daily Kos community is simply this: if you have any ins with a printer, any contacts, please hook us up. There is on caveat on this request.
Print-On-Demand Publishers Will NOT Work For Us
The reason is that pretty much all of them, Booklocker, iUniverse, AuthorHouse and Xlibirs, Lulu and most others have their books printed by one printing company: Lightning Source.
Lightning Source places restrictions on books with color illustrations that make this an unworkable prospect for Kosmos. They only offers color-interior printing at 2 sizes (8.5 x 8.5 - typical children's book size - and 8.25 x 11). And, books with color can't exceed 120 pages.
The way things are looking if we went with this printer, to print our one book, we would need to do it in three volumes because Kosmos is almost 300 pages! The pricing is also suicidal. We want people to be able to afford to go to Yearly Kos after purchasing a book!
We are looking at Print-On-Demand if we are forced to go with black and white.
Our goal in publishing this book is to raise $15,000 for Yearly Kos from the proceeds of this book. All of us involved - from bestselling science authors and paleoartists to simply talented and enthusiastic Kossacks - are donating our time and our work towards this. This is a real book with an incredible amount of talent and effort put into it. Our team of over twenty individual Kossacks includes lawyers, marketing guys, authors, artists, organizers... you name it.
We've made a book that Daily Kos can be proud of. Please help us make it a physical reality. If you think you can help us get this book into print please let us know by emailing us at ebookvols.yearlykos@gmail.com. Thank you!
