The Pew Research study shows
"The public generally takes a negative view of the hiring by U.S. businesses of lower-cost workers in other countries to produce goods and services. About seven-in-ten Americans (69%) believe "outsourcing" is a bad thing because it sends good jobs overseas; just 22% feel it is good because it keeps costs down"
This is an issue the Democratic Party needs to brainstorm on, and come up with solutions.
John Kerry did make it a minor issue. Kerry's problem was as follows: He proposed to end tax breaks for outsourcing American jobs, but everyone knows that won't work. Large corporations don't outsource for tax breaks, they outsource to save on wages and beneifts.
In brainstorming, I can't come up with a lot of solutions either except to maybe:
- Deny government business to corporations who outsource.
- Revise the tax laws where if a certain percentage of your employees are overseas, you are considered a foriegn corporation and are taxed heavily on U.S. sales.
Anyone have any other ideas? This is a potent issue, if we
can put the right spin on it and come up with some actual solutions. Working class and middle class wages are not keeping pace with the cost of housing, health care, gas, and so on. This is an explosive issue, if we play it the right way.
