After reading different threads about the filibuster, I decided to send each of my Senators an e-mail, thanking them for supporting the filibuster against Alito. And, in case anyone is thinking of doing the same, I thought I'd share with you what I wrote.
Senator Durbin,
I just wanted to thank you for standing firm in your resolution to not confirm Judge Alito to the Supreme Court.
Thank you for standing up for women's rights.
Thank you for standing up for the average working American rather than the huge corporations.
Thank you for standing up for a system of checks and balances that have served our country and our government for over 200 years.
You are my voice in Washington, and I am proud to continue to give you my vote.
Thank you,
Laura in Bloomingdale, IL
More on the flip...
I'm really proud of the job Dick Durbin has done and I wanted to let him know.
On the other hand, I'm not as content with Senator Obama, and I let him know it.
Senator Obama,
I want to thank you for doing the right thing and supporting a filibuster against Judge Alito and his nomination to the Supreme Court. However, I am a little disappointed in your seeming reluctance to make that choice.
What happened to the person who stood at the podium in 2000 and stated that the decision to have an abortion should be between a woman, her doctor and her god? If you truly believed this statement, voting yes to filibuster should have been a no brainer.
Judge Alito has a judicial record where he was consistantly in the minority when it came to decisions. Wouldn't those decisions have been a red-flag to highlight that maybe this wasn't the best person to put on the court?
Remember that Judge Alito was nominated AFTER Harriet Miers, a supposedly qualified person who was asked to withdraw her nomination by this President due to pressure from his own party. When Bush says that Judge Alito deserves an up or down vote, remember that his first choice didn't even get that far.
Please remember, Senator Obama, whose voice you are in Washington. You are the voice of women, of children, of people who are working 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet in this struggling economy. We put our faith in you with our vote. Now is the time to show us that our faith was worth it.
Sincerely,
Laura in Bloomingdale, IL
We'll see if I get any response, especially from Obama. I'm usually just on dKos to read the site, maybe comment once or twice, but this issue inspired me enough to post a diary. My apologies if this is a rehash of someone else's thread.
