I know,
this is absolutely shocking. I feel so...betrayed. No, really. I do. Really.
Claim: U.S. would invade, WMD or not
LONDON, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A British author claims President George W. Bush told Prime Minister Tony Blair the United States would invade Iraq even without evidence of illegal weapons.
Philippe Sands -- professor of law at University College London -- writes in a new edition of his book, "Lawless Worlds," that notes from a Bush-Blair White House meeting on January 31, 2003, indicate Bush said he intended to carry out the invasion even if U.N. weapons inspectors found no evidence of banned weapons programs.
The whole (short) article is also on then flip, with some flippant comments of my own.
Here
it is:
Claim: U.S. would invade, WMD or not
LONDON, Feb.
The memo quoted Bush as telling Blair, "The diplomatic strategy had to be arranged around the military planning," The Guardian reported.
Blair is quoted as saying he was "solidly with the president and ready to do whatever it took to disarm Saddam (Hussein)," the newspaper said.
Bush also told Blair he had considered flying a U.S. military plane painted in United Nations colors over Iraq in hopes it would be attacked.
Blair told Bush at the meeting a second U.N. resolution authorizing an invasion -- which the United Nations had not yet adopted -- would be an "insurance policy," providing "international cover, including with the Arabs" if anything went wrong with the military campaign.
My favorite is the dressing up of the US plane to look like a UN plane in the hope that it get shot down. Never mind that there would be people FLYING the plane whose lives would presumably be lost.
The combination of W's (1) lack of regard for things like decency, morality, human life, or really anything other than what he wants, plus (2) TOTAL INCOMPETENCE of execution, would make this really, really comical if he weren't hurting so many people.
As an aside, does anyone else get the sense that he behaves as if this is all a video game called "Commander-in-Chief"?
