I'm Sending Republicans Monopoly Moneytm...
Because They Cannot Be Trusted With Real MoneyThis Week: Representative Mike Ferguson (NJ-07)Let me recap:
It's sad, but it's true.
Republicans cannot be trusted with real money. So I'm sending them Monopoly
tm money instead.
From reckless, budget-busting spending to billions wasted in Iraq to giving our hard-earned dollars away to fat-cat chums with no-bid contracts (Haliburton), Republicans (sadly) have pissed away any claims they might have once had to fiscal sense.
The Republican Party cannot be trusted with real money. So I'm sending them Monopoly
tm money instead. (For a full recap,
read yesterday's diary.)

ImagineImagine Tom DeLay, Bill Frist, the folks at the RNC opening envelopes that they expect to be filled with donations and finding currency that they can only used if they land on Baltic Avenue.
Imagine how humorous it will be for the press (especially local press) to report that a Republican incumbant, like Senator DeWine, or a Republican challenger (like, say, Maryland senate-hopeful Steele) received $10,000 from constituents -- in a form that they can only spend during a parlor game at Aunt Petunia's. Because their constituents don't trust them with the real stuff.
Don't Have Any Monopoly Moneytm Money On Hand? That's okay. Hasbro (the makers of the Monopoly
tm game), has put all its Monopoly
tm denominations in .pdf format. Just print, cut them out, and send to the most deserving Republican on your list:
print your own Monopolytm moneyMike Ferguson, NJ-07Mike Ferguson slid into Congress in the 2000 election. The district he was running in, New Jersey's 7th, had just been vacated by Bob Franks (R), who had been a moderate Republican vote (Franks was leaving to run against Jon Corzine for retiring Senator Frank Lautenberg's seat).
New Jersey is definitely a pro-choice state, overall. And our Republicans have tended to be more moderate overall. But the arrival of Ferguson on the scene was disturbing. He was decidedly anti-choice and in many ways not the kind of New Jersey Republican that New Jerseyans have liked in the past. There are questions of legality regarding his 2000 primary win over Tom Kean, Jr. His election (he narrowly beat out Democratic candidate Maryanne Connolly in a traditionally Republican-held district) heralded bad tidings for New Jerseyans, who expected the next crop of Republicans to behave the way the last did. Ferguson likes to keep his extreme streak obscured. He likes to paint himself as a moderate, but has basically been a rubber stamp for the Bush administration. (In 2002, New Jersey's 5th district would feel similar pain, as their moderate Republican voice, Marge Roukema, was replaced by hyper-conservative Republican Scott Garrett, who campaigned as a moderate).
Mike Ferguson has won the honor of a Web site devoted to his extreme political antics,
DumpMike.com (Garrett won his own version,
DumpGarrett.com). If you want to keep abreast of the latest Ferguson outrage, that's where you bunk.
I Don't Live in New Jersey -- Heck, I don't Even Live in New Jersey's 7th District -- Why Should I Send Monopolytm Money to Mike Ferguson?
Because no matter where you live, Mike Ferguson has cost you.
New Jersey's 7th is winnable for a Democrat. Having a Repubican -- having
this Republican in the seat is a cost to the entire nation. Here's how Mike Ferguson wastes your money and your resources:
- Voted for the budget bill that slashed benefits to seniors, the disabled and the disadvantaged
- Voted for the budget bill that reduced the amount pharmacies are reimbursed under Medicaid, resulting in increased costs for 1.3 million Americans (not just New Jerseyans)
- Voted for the budget bill that forced seniors to include the equity in their homes to assess their wealth level, forcing many seniors to sell their homes to qualify for benefits
- Voted for the budget bill that cut student loans by $12 billion

- Voted for the Iraq War, which pissed away hundreds of millions of dollars for nothing
- Supported Bush's disasterous, Social Security-killing privatization scheme
- Supported funding of the section of the Patriot Act that allows unbridled, broad access to library records, book store sales records and customer lists

You see, our little New Jersey Congresscritter is costing you more than you think. You may not live in New Jersey's 7th, but he still has a big impact on your life, your wallet and even your family (he's a big supporter of the Iraq war). Mike Ferguson takes a toll on your wallet, your civil liberties, your national security, your health...I could go on, but I don't need to -- you get it.
So please, please send Mike Ferguson some Monopoly
tm money, to send him the message that we don't trust him with the real thing.
Dear Representative Ferguson,
I'm dismayed that you cannot take a stand against this administration's reckless spending and reckless actions. The budget is out of control, and instead of making wise fiscal choices, you chose to support ill-timed tax cuts pushed by the Bush administration.
You also voted for the disasterous bankruptcy bill, which puts severe hardships on families that declare bankruptcy due to medical reasons (a leading cause).
I'm also incredibly dismayed that you support the most intrusive aspects of the Patriot Act. You supported the broad searching of private records of libraries and bookstores.
Because you have shown little desire to stand up against the Bush administration when it attacks the welfare of New Jerseyans (health issues, national security issues, privacy issues), I have extreme doubts that you will be able to stand up to the Bush administration regarding its outrageous, warrantless searches (bypassing FISA).
You need to know that New Jerseyans (and Americans in general) have little faith in the ability of Republicans to manage money and resources. Because of this, I am sending you $50 in Monopolytm money. I will be sending your opponent the real thing.
Sincerely,
NJGoldfinch
