(Shameless plug: PLEASE recommend this diary! We're almost out of $$, and our blogads are about to end!)
Folks, for those of you who've been following the saga of the DC Olympic Curling Team, I am happy to report that we've now had coverage in The Washington Post, Salon, Time Magazine, and NBC and Fox TV.
You can watch the Fox TV clip as on the site as well as see the links.
For those not familiar with the issue, the people of Washington, DC do not have voting Senators or Representatives. We have one non-voting delegate to the House, Eleanor Holmes Norton. But as tough as Rep. Norton is (I mean, you gotta be tough when you have two heavyweight champs in your last name), there's only so much you can do without a vote.
The DC Olympic Curling team is an attempt to creatively bring attention to our plight. We are trying to get the International Olympic Committee to recognize the DC team as an official team. There is some precedent for this -- Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands all have teams, and they too are parts of the US, but without voting representation in Congress.
Now, this issue might sound kind of esoteric and peripheral for those not in DC, but think of it this way -- we raised holy hell when votes weren't counted in Florida. Well, when it comes to Congress, the people of DC haven't had their votes counted in
200 years.
So please, come to www.DCOlympicTeam.org, send a message to the IOC, and most importantly -- keep spreading the word about this effort.
Big thanks to everyone who has sent encouragement, blogged about this, and helped to get our message out there.
