I read an article today, just now actually on CNN, that included a reference to God by the star of the article. I wrote a little piece for my own blog and decide this would be an interesting debate to throw up.
Perhaps it would be better suited for Street Prophets but I'm not looking to turn this into some huge diary.
Your thoughts are appreicated. Simple discussion and curious introspection is all that's needed in this diary. Let's try not to flame each other.
God fearing? Or God loving?
I've never believed in god or "a" god. I think the notion of some supernatural omniscient being who has been here since the beginning of time, created everything ever, everywhere in 6 or 7 (the big rest) days time is about as believable as the idea that the Earth is flat or that the Sun revolves around the Earth.
And when I read stories like this, it simply solidifes my disbelief in such a "peaceful, loving, forgiving god."
...Police arrested Schlosser in November 2004 after finding her baby Margaret, known as Maggie, dying in her crib, and Schlosser covered in blood, holding a knife and listening to a hymn.
...
But psychiatrists testifying for the defense told jurors of multiple psychotic episodes Schlosser detailed to them. One doctor said Schlosser told him she felt commanded by God to cut off Maggie's arms, followed by her own limbs and head. Schlosser had a deep cut on her shoulder when police found her...
Sure...the woman probably
is nuts. But who defines who is nuts? Society. And that's sadly ironic because society at large will shun a group of people who believe in UFOs (which probably have a higher scientific likliness of being real) and little green men who fly around in spaceships and abduct people to probe their anus'.
Yet the idea of this super being who's responsible for everything is totally realistic and legit. So why isn't he responsible for this? Oh right.....because this woman is obviously nuts, right?
Religion is the direct cause of some of the nastiest fighting, both currently, and in world history. Yet god is supposed to be peaceful and loving. Can anyone explain how groups of people who are trying to wipe each other out can cite god as their leader, while also saying god is all powerful, loving, etc?
Seems somewhat oxymoronic to me.
Kinda like jumbo-shrimp.
I think the quote below sums up how I feel about religion rather well.
"Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of 10 things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these 10 things, he has a special place full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever til the end of time...but he loves you." -- George Carlin
