Once upon a time, there was an American political party that expressed fervent belief in a principle called "states' rights." The states, it was said, were closer to "the people" and therefore better informed and equipped to handle matters of political and social policy. Some of you, like me, may remember this party as being the Republican Party.
On Thursday, the U.S. House is scheduled to vote on a bill that wil strip away all existing food safety regulations established at the state level. So, if a state has chosen to have a guideline that is more strict than the federal Food and Drug Administration, this law would no longer exist. One would think that this idea would be fully opposed by the alleged "states' rights" advocates, the Republicans. One would be wrong: this is a Republican bill, and it is nothing but another in a long line of concessions to corporate America at the expense of public welfare.
This bill deserves to go down to defeat. But it has not received much attention. Please consider taking a momnet to visit this site and send a quickie email to your representative in Washington. Your stomach will thank you for it.
