Lautenberg wants block on proposal that eases rules on foreign control of airlines
March 8, 2006, 9:48 PM EST
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Democratic New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg on Wednesday called on the Senate to block a proposed regulation by President Bush that would relax restrictions on foreign control of U.S. airlines.
Lautenberg sent a letter to Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist and Democratic Leader Harry Reid asking for quick action on a bill he introduced last year with Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, that would prevent the administration from ending a 65-year ban on foreign ownership of U.S. airlines.
Bush wants to give foreign investors in U.S. airlines more latitude in management decisions as an incentive to encourage overseas investment in the industry. The proposal would give foreign investors more influence than they are currently allowed over marketing, flight routes and what kinds of airplanes to operate.
Lautenberg said the impact of the regulation on national defense needs to be studied.
"First our ports, now our airlines _ President Bush is holding a fire sale of vital parts of our U.S. economy," Lautenberg said. "The safety and security of the flying public should be the president's top priority _ not helping foreign companies with their bottom line."
In the House, Reps. Frank LoBiondo, R-N.J., and James Oberstar, D-Minn., are sponsoring legislation backed by 153 other members to prevent the regulation from going into effect for at least a year and to give Congress the right to veto it.
