Now that the Dubai port system fiasco is dead, many reasons are being given as to why it's dead, however in the final analysis, one main reason comes forward, good old fashion racism.
Both Republicans and Democrats, mostly Republicans, didn't want Dubai, one of those filthy, vile "Arab" countries to have a stake on our ports. Never mind that both British and Chinese companies already have a stake on ports here in the US.
Over the past few days, Duncan Hunter on the right, and Chuck Shumer on the left, have come out, guns ablazing, on why this was a bad idea. They gave you 10,000 different reasons why this deal should not go through, however, nobody gave you the real reason.
Before the port deal even was comtemplated, the Arab world, mostly because of our idiotic invasion of Iraq, thought the US was a racist nation in the first place. Our steadfast support for Israel didn't help matters either, but if the Arab world hated us before, imagine what they must think of us now.
Now, I was not enamered with this deal either because it would have given Bush buddy John Snow, and other crony friends of Bush, millions of dollars in one hell of a sweethart deal, but now xenophobia is running rampant, and Congress played the race card to the hilt.
Republicans are now slapping themselves on the back, thinking they held their own against Bush, and Democrats are now ready to take on Bush in other areas. What happens if Halliburton takes over the ports? Wouldn't that be worse then Dubai doing the same?
Bottom line is that racism, in all its ugliness, overrode common sense. Dubai is now out. Congratulations boys and girls, US opinion around the world just got a whole lot worse.
