Everyone should be sending an email to their Senators with guidance on Censure. Here's mine:
I believe that Senator Russ Feingold's Censure bill is a necessary first step in holding President Bush accountable for his violation of the law and thus his oath to faithfully uphold the laws of the United States of America.
If he is not subject to censure and subsequent impeachment for trial regarding this lawbreaking, what will be the future standard that we hold Presidents to? How many laws can a President break without recourse of law?
If you do not take these steps, can you give me an explanation that I can give to my children for your inaction? Do you believe that FISA is not a law? That the President has the right to choose which laws to follow? That his actions were not really violating the law? That separation of power and violations of FISA are minor matters that can be ignored?
I am not one who thinks that things will get much better just by censuring President Bush or even impeachment and possible conviction. President Cheney doesn't sound any better to me, nor would President Hastert. But I believe you have to take action not because it is expedient, but because there is no other alternative for you if you are to do your duty as a United States Senator. If you see an alternative, please let me know, but I don't see it.
