The President broke the law when he failed to follow the FISA law. Simple as that. Who cares if Feingold's censure motion is grandstanding or posturing for a Presdential run. Who cares if the President's rating is at 34%. The question is whether the President broke the law. The answer is that he clearly has, and since we won't get an investigation, let's try to censure the guy and point out that he failed to preserve and protect the Constitution. But, evidently, the Democratic leadership lacks the gonads to call the President what he is - a lawbreaker.
Mark my words, decades from now we will find out that the President has been syping on more than just the "terorists". We will find out that he has been spying on dissenters, war protesters, journalists, and, yes, Democratic politicians. You can't honestly believe this Administration will police itself, and that is where we are at, we have to trust the Administration to police iteslf because there is no check on them. Of course, this Administration will not police themselves, and will instead become more embolden in conducting illegal activities, in part because of the Democrats inability to mount an opposition.
Start looking for imprisonment of newsman and whistleblowers. Start looking for police confrontations at protests. Start looking for anonymous phone calls to employers. Start looking for talk of more war. Start looking for newspapers to give us even less news. Start looking for blogs to become regulated and ultimately controlled. Think of McCarthyism, because that is the direction this is going if someone doesn't take a stand.
Of course, I won't fault the Republicans for falling into line behind their "leader". What fries me to no end is that the Democrats, the party my family has supported for almost 125 years, bailed. Disgraceful. One can never go wrong standing up for the Constitution and yet the Democratic Party failed to do their duty. Evidently, Mr. Feingold and Mr. Kerry take protecting the Constitution seriously, I hope others see the light and do the same, although it looks to me like it is getting pretty late in the day for some of these people to stand up.
