The head of the Church of England, Rowan Williams, spoke out firmly against the teaching of creationism in schools, according to The Guardian.
Williams is the Archbishop of Canterbury - the equivalent of a pope for the worldwide Anglican Communion which includes the U.S. Episcopal Church, the third-largest Christian denomination.
The Anglican faith has always emphasized bringing reason and rationality to faith decisions, so this isn't a huge surprise. Still, I found it a refreshing reminder that not all people of faith are against science. Pull-outs and link are below.
"I think creationism is ... a kind of category mistake, as if the Bible were a theory like other theories ... if creationism is presented as a stark alternative theory alongside other theories I think there's just been a jarring of categories ... My worry is creationism can end up reducing the doctrine of creation rather than enhancing it," Williams said as quoted by The Guardian.
The Archbishop also cautiously reiterated his commitment to holding the denomination together despite global disagreement between the American church, which has officially elected to support and affirm openly gay clergy, and more conservative dioceses, such as Nigeria, which vehemently disagree. In addition he denounced central African bishops who have been vocally anti-Muslim to the point of advocating violence.

I decided to diary this, though it is not earth-shattering news, because The Guardian does not reference the Episcopal Church per se and I felt some Kossacks might overlook the information lacking an explicit American context.
