Today's high school kids are tomorrow's political leaders, and they are showing off their skills at self-organizing student walkouts. It is interesting to see what tools they are using.
Orange County:
The protests were part of a high school student walkout that drew students from schools in cities that included Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Anaheim, Westminster, La Habra, Fullerton, Irvine, Huntington Beach and Tustin. [...]
Elementary schools were locked down in Garden Grove after police were informed that a district-wide protest had been planned over the weekend by students using the Myspace.com Web site, said Garden Grove police Lt. Mike Handfield.
Texas:
Thousands of students walked out of high schools in Dallas and Houston on Monday, marching to parks and federal buildings to rally for immigrant rights as Congress worked on several immigration proposals. [...]
"I was surprised that I was able to pull the numbers that I have," said Duncanville High School student Gustavo Jimenez, 16, who said he was inspired to organize a protest after seeing encouragement for protests on MySpace, a social networking Web site.
Bay Area:
Hundreds of San Jose high school and middle school students walked out of their schools and gathered in front of city hall today to protest pending immigration reforms. And in San Francisco, more than 1,000 protesters were heading into the city's main thoroughfare, Market Street, just before noon today. [...]
The students, who cheered slogans at passing drivers, said the protest had been organized through posters, text-messaging campaigns and word of mouth.
San Diego:
Superintendent Ed Nelson of the Escondido Union School District said the protests were "somewhat coordinated by someone somewhere." He said fliers were distributed by a core of students, who encouraged others to leave before classes began.
Some students at Grape Day Park said they read about the protests on the popular Web site myspace.com or heard about it from friends.
