Did your paper run
George Will's column today,
denying global warming?
Mine did. Thanks to this diary I was prepared, and wrote a letter to the editor (below the fold). Maybe it will help encourage you to write your own.
Dear Editor (Columbus Dispatch)
I noticed today's column by George Will, casting doubt on global warming. I also noticed the major stories about tornado deaths across the country, with a tornado season that has arrived months early this year.
And I recalled that for the first time in my life, my lawn remained green through the winter, and I saw thunderstorms in December. I no longer have to turn on the TV for evidence of global warming. It is here.
So why does George Will continue to argue otherwise? That is no mystery. A memo from GOP strategist Frank Luntz tells Republicans:
"Voters believe that there is no consensus about global warming within the scientific community. Should the public come to believe that the scientific issues are settled, their views about global warming will change accordingly. Therefore, you need to continue to make the lack of scientific certainty a primary issue in the debate."
In other words, lie.
But it is a dangerous lie that serves only to keep us from attempting to do something about the problem. And it's time global warming doubters be relegated to the ranks of Holocaust deniers and smoking apologists.
It may already be too late. It is definitely long past when we can afford to waste time listening to the likes of George Will. Please consider putting your op-ed space to better use--or if you to run his column, have someone take a few minutes to Google up the facts and present the truth too.
