Yes, I know I'm
WAY over my skis on this, but there WILL come a time (soon, I hope!) in which we'll have an opportunity to right the wrongs that the Shrub "administration" has committed.
The list, of course, nearly is immeasurable. And, sadly, there are some things that just can't be fixed. But we can try; furthermore, it is our DUTY to
Restore America.
More after the visual speed bump:
This is far from an exhaustive list and it might even not be particularly insightful (surprise!) but there will be an end to all this crap: As I once heard in a great sermon, "The storm will end, and the boat will not sink." We've got to start somewhere, so here are a few beginnings:
"Fixing" Congress might be a good place to start. Maybe legislatively define more distinctly (without unnecessarily inhibiting -- a hard balance) the powers and the relationship of the three branches of government.
"Fix" our relationship with the world. Stop saber-rattling. But if someone attacks us, we should never give up on finding them and bringing them to justice. Close Gitmo and the other rendition sites.
"Fix" Homeland Security, first by changing its name. Then, by implementing all the measures suggested by the 9/11 committee.
"Fix" the Medicare prescription plan by having the government, not insurance companies (like the insurance companies who have yet to settle Katrina claims) negotiate for better pricing.
"Fix" the national budget. Eliminate the deficits -- not on the backs of those who can least afford it, but on the backs of those of us who should pay our fair share.
"Fix" education. Stop teaching to the lowest common level and to nation-wide tests. Separate funding for education from property taxes. Restore and make more broadly accessible federal aid to colleges (e.g., Pell grants).
"Fix" our nation's infrastructure. Use some of the eventual budget surpluses to repair roads, bridges, airports.
OK, there are hundreds more issues that also need to be fixed. And my suggestions might not be the best ways, either -- God knows I'm wrong. A LOT. But Restoration WILL happen.
What ways do YOU suggest we Restore America?
