Does anyone know why the price of gas is soaring? Apparently our President doesn't know. He tells us that the Federal Trade Commission, the Justice Department and the Energy Department are investigating whether the price of gasoline has been unfairly manipulated. Don't you think that an oilman would know whether prices are being unfairly manipulated? Of course they're being unfairly manipulated!
The royal screwing of the American public just keeps getting worse. Not only are the prices at the pump skyrocketing, they're also using it as an excuse to demand that we open up ANWAR for drilling (let no pristine environment go un-exploited) and today Bush ordered a temporary suspension of environmental rules for gasoline! Does that mean that global warming has been temporarily suspended too? If I was a more cynical type of person, I'd think that raising the price of gas is a pretty good way to get people to agree to suspending environmental regulations. Sort of like using 9/11 to suspend our Constitutional rights?
After we ruled out WMDs and all of the other lies fed to us for invading Iraq, wasn't it all supposed to be about the oil? I'm told that the primary focus of our troops in Iraq isn't to protect the Iraqi people while they "build their new democracy" - no they are getting blown to bits protecting the oil fields. So where is all of that oil going? Weren't we told that regime change in Iraq would increase oil and drive down prices?
Alright, enough complaining. Let's talk about solutions. We need real-world, environmentally responsible energy solutions that will free Americans from the greedy manipulations of the oil cartel, including those currently running our country.
Here's a few ideas being proposed by Democrats that I support (you will note that none of these suggestions would hurt our environment or our economy):
- Launch an Apollo Project for Energy that would put our best minds and resources toward meeting our energy needs with domestic, environmentally-friendly alternative energy sources, to completely free the US of foreign oil dependence by 2020. We can put Americans to work in technology and manufacturing, stabilize our economy and secure our country by being a world leader in the alternative energy sector.
- Let's make conservation cool! Develop a national marketing plan to educate and inspire Americans in energy conservation. Conservation consciousness doesn't ask people to sacrifice anything, it empowers them to take control of their own future and feel good about it.
- Use incentives to make energy production from solar, wind and geothermal more profitable than fossil fuel or nuclear energy, so shareholders will demand that energy corporations choose these environmentally responsible, locally produced sources.
- Support American farmers growing biofuels and organize a nationwide distribution network of bio-fuel filling stations.
- Provide incentives for the development, production and purchase of fuel-efficient vehicles and discourage the production of gas guzzlers with significant impact fees.
- Increase mass transit use with enhanced accessibility, convenience, safety and affordable fares and offer incentives for transit-oriented community development.
- Improve air traffic management to shorten flight times
- Reduce tractor trailer fuel needs by improving aerodynamics, logistics and idling and bio-diesel availability.
Imagine what it would be like to live in a country that is energy independent, where we can enjoy traveling without paying a fortune for fuel and knowing that we are not harming our environment. This isn't pie-in-the-sky daydreaming. We already have much of the technology to accomplish this. All we need is the will and the wholehearted support of our government. If you need a reason to support Democratic candidates, this is it.
Every time you put that gas nozzle back in the pump and look at the amount of money you've just contributed to the oilmen of the world, imagine what it will be like when we are free of their greedy grip. Then open your wallet one more time and send a contribution to a candidate committed to making that happen.
