Just when you think you've seen everything, see this:

Gubernatorial candidate for Governor in Alabama does virtual strip tease for campaign dollars.

There is a serious side to this silliness, however.  More below the fold...

There is so much wrong with Alabama politics it is really hard to know where to begin.  But third party ballot access is a big one, and one that should worry progressives nationwide.  Loretta Nall, granted, is a pro-gun, anti-government Libertarian.  Not necessarily the average Kos-ters cuppa.  But the fact that after she has received the official nomination of the state Libertarian Party she STILL has to fight to get on the ballot is ridiculous.

The fact that she is engaging in this sexy political stunt sure to shut the mouths of the religious right stranglehold in this state is fabulous.  Shake it, Loretta.

I'm not off my soapbox yet, a story on our local NPR station pointed out yesterday that lobbyists in Alabama can spend up to $250.00 PER DAY on each individual legislator without reporting a DIME of it to anyone.  So of course US Steel and Alabama Power and all the other people-who-really-run-this-state just keep it to $249.99.  Per DAY.  Per LEGISLATOR.

Don't get me started on Alabama's racist constitution.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

The only logical explanation is that ANY publicity is good publicity when you're a no-name third-party candidate.  Though I doubt this will help the Libertarian party or her own candidacy.  Might make her some money though.

Now why does Mary Carey come to mind?

Alabama should be so lucky as to have her for their Governor.  Fuck, New York should be so lucky.

Give a read to her discussion concerning her and her mom's choice to not wear underwear. It is a fun read, though sad in the end.

Turns out you have to be wearing panties to visit an inmate in Alabama.

I think we should organize Liberal versus right wing blogger teams and completely DOMINATE this competition!

The Center for Sex and Culture's National Masturbation Month plans include Masturbate-a-Thon San Francisco. Founder and director Carol Queen, Ph.D. announced that the Center for Sex & Culture will hold its fifth annual fund-raising Masturbate-a-Thon on May 27, 2006, doors open at 5:00 for regular participants and at 4:00 for those attempting to set this year's time record. The event is one of many National Masturbation Month events planned around the US and Canada, including many sponsored Masturbate-a-Thons. Unlike most of the others, the CSC's Masturbate-a-Thon is a live group event at which participants will raise funds by getting others to sponsor them for each minute they masturbate. CSC will hold the event at 398 11th Street in San Francisco.

Founded by San Francisco's own women-owned, worker-owned sex toy company Good Vibrations in the wake of then-Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders' firing for stating that masturbation "is perhaps something that should be taught" about when discussing youth sexual options, National Masturbation Month seeks to raise awareness and dispel shame about this most common and natural of sexual activities.

The flash thing is really just a sideshow; in a way, it's a disservice to her, as many people will just make that connection.

Read the 'bio, and I think you'll agree.

  •  Nall More Liberal than the Dems Running in 'bama (0+ / 0-)

    "pro-gun, anti-government Libertarian"

Despite this, Nall's platform and campaign actions are more liberal than Baxley or Siegelman.  Guns are not an issue this race and Nall is not running on any sort of anti-government platform.  It isn't likely that taxes will be a big issue, and I know Nall well enough that the only tax bills she would sign would be considerably more fair to the poorest people in the state.

I outlined a long list of why gay Democrats should support Nall here.  The arguments generally apply for all Democrats.

    Here's the Cliffs Notes version:

    1. Baxley is ducking the issues, but seems to be trying to out-Jesus Roy Moore
    1. Siegelman is currently in trial for giving HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy $500K in exchange for an important appointment
    1. Nall is showing at gay rights events the other candidates duck
    1. Nall promotes gay rights (as well as medical marijuana, prison reform, and other issues you will likely agree with) in her platform
    1. Nall is the only open-border candidate
    1. Nall is opposed to the war in Iraq while the others are flaunting yellow ribbons
    1. Nall opposes corporate welfare (which Baxley speaks on, too -- but not Siegelman)

Even from a liberal or progressive point-of-view, Nall is a great candidate.
