As a novice DKos diarist, please forgive me if this rambles.
As someone who works evenings and spends a lot of time doing uneventful things on his computer, it should come as no shock that I finally saw Stephen Colbert's performance at the White House Press Correspondent's Dinner not 10 minutes ago. And, I must say, I am shocked and appalled ...
... at what the fuck took so long.
The ultimate bubble boy, finally dragged out on the carpet with all his sycophants to be sent up by a first-rate comedian on what is rapidly becoming the premier cable network for social commentary in this nation. From South Park (as much as the conservatives would love to claim that show for their own ... sorry, it ain't the case) to the Daily Show to Carlos Mencia to the Colbert Report, Comedy Central has become what those pants-pissers at CNN or even MSNBC (with a notable exception) have become, and what FOX News never pretended not to be. And it's all thanks to Colbert.
Never before has a president (lower-cased "p" intentional) been called out on the carpet for such a litany of lies and half-truths. Never before has a president, in front of peers, family and the media he so despises been depantsed and spanked raw in front of an entire nation. Never before has a "president" been so fully skewered by a guy that the dinner organizers figured was just an O'Reilly knockoff.
This is the beginning of the end for these bozos.
So many scandals, so many derelictions of duty. The Iraq debacle. Plame. NSA wiretapping. Cheney shooting some other rich asshole in the face. The revolving door of sycophants that leaves the same faces in different places. The ignoring generals who have been on the field of battle, who have seen what it takes to win a war.
The reminder of what happened on a certain Tuesday in September of 2001 ... a joke so utterly fucking tasteless that it made me swell with pride to see a comedian blast it back in Junior's face like an ill-turned snowblower.
Plus, some pretty damn funny stuff to go along with it.
Colbert has opened the door that Stewart showed the way to. The time is now, if we are going to save this nation, this world and ourselves in the process.
The time is now. Get out the vote. Tell your neighbors. Tell your friends. Tell anyone who will listen.
Before it's too late.
That's what I got out of Colbert's performance. A man who grabbed the brass ring and shoved it down the president's fucking throat.
If a guy on basic cable can do that, I don't see any reason why I can't. And I don't see any reason why you can't too.
