Offered up on the National Day of Prayer:
Dear God,
Please let us continue in blissful ignorance to the faults of us and our nation.
Especially our seemingly endless war in Iraq. Blind to the tens of thousands of innocent children, women and men we've killed. Blind especially by that trick of renaming them Insurgents, as if they're not Iraqi and we did not invade their country. Blind to the bombs we've dropped, the bullits we've shot, the souldiers of our own who've been killed and maimed and damaged in hundreds of thousands of ways during this war.
Please help us to continue not to question the reasons why we went to war, because those things are not for us to know. Let us just accept the ever-changing justifications of our president at face value and move on.
Please help us to continue to support our glorious troops and to understand there are many ways to do that other than providing them with body armor or armored vehicles to keep them safe. Or providing them with adequate numbers of soldiers to do their job, or a generous health care system when they return home.
Please help us to ignore the suffering of children in our own country and around the world. The hungry, the sick, the dying, the homeless, the hopeless, for we can not solve all problems on our own. We leave those mysteries to you.
Please help us to understand it's not for us Christians to solve problems like the astonishing number of Americans without health care, people living in poverty, or people abused by a system of blatant capitalism and profits for the very few, made on the back of the many.
Please let us continue to have a government that understands that certain people are entitled to live well, with lots of money, and some are not. That for those who do not, it's not our fault, but theirs. That some are entitled to government tax breaks and laws that add to their wealth and others are not.
Please don't let our glorious leader be troubled by mere things like the rule of law, the Constitution or ideas of right and wrong. Let us continue to believe, as he says, that he has a direct pipeline to you and always does your bidding. That when he tortures in our name, it is okay. When he imprisons illegally in our name, it is okay.
Help us to see that certain people deserve your wrath and our condemnation, like the homosexuals, the people of the gulf coast of America, the illegal brown people who dare to cross our borders into our country uninvited, even if our citizens and especially our large companies exploit them at will for their own gain.
Help us to understand that it is right to condemn those who don't follow certain things you may have meant to say in the Bible or may have been interpreted to say, but that it is fine to ignore certain other teachings if we choose to and continue to call ourselves Good Christians.
Show us the way to oppress those of all religions but our own, to have the strength, the faith and the determination to use everything in our power to show them that our way is the right way, the only way.
In his name we pray,
The Religious Right.
