Just had the opportunity to hear Cong. Jack Murtha at a town meeting called by Rep. Jan Schakowsky at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Apparently he's giving these speeches around the country where Congresspersons invite him. I estimate at least 500 people were in attendance. The hall was filled with sound/video piped into an overflow location.
Murtha was great, laying out the arguments against the Bush policies in Iraq. Little of it was unfamiliar although I was surprised to learn that over 100 congressmen had signed onto his resolution.
He warned audience not to forget 2006 while focusing on 2008. He plainly said more than once that a Democratic congress would hold hearings on the many debacles of the Bush Administration, using the phrase "subpoena power".
Most noteworthy was a question posed by an audience member asking why more congressional Democrats were not speaking out on the war as he was. He talked in generalities for awhile, then said he couldn't understand some of these so-called presidential candidates, including one, who (paraphrasing here) "- I'm not going to say what sex she is - came to me saying she didn't think the time was right for this kind of position, and I told her 'This is the time to show some leadership.'" Interesting to me that he was so explicit.
Not mentioned by speakers or audience: Iran.
All in all, an interesting afternoon.
