In the mail today was a large envelope labeled 'Photo Inside - Do Not Bend'.  I opened it, and found a large quantity of typically vile propoganda from Vernon Robinson's congressional campaign.  I was just about to trash it, when I noticed a real gem: "Brad Miller's San Fransisco Soulmate", next to a picture of Markos, and above a long diatribe about how horrible it is that Rep. Miller blogs here.
A scan and some comments below the cut.

It is a very well-crafted piece of hate speech.  My first reaction was amusement at lines like this:
"Markos publishes Brad Miller's diary on his Internet website (along with other things such as nude pornographic photographs of a male homosexual prostitute named Jim Guckert."
But then I remember that the average voter doesn't know who Guckert is.  They can't read between the lines.  They'd see no humor, there.  As propoganda, this is quite an effective piece.  This is one hell of a dirty campaign he's running.
And that scares me.
That scares me enough to finally make me get off my rear.
Rep. Miller, I'm putting in my application to volunteer for your campaign just as soon as I post this diary.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Holy crap. I guess you really can't have enough code hate words for Republican voters in North Carolina.

But; methinks Vernon Robinson doesn't really know what snake he stepped on here . . .

I wonder if that pic is from the CTG cover or something, because there would definitely be copyright issues.

Send Brad Miller some money.  He is going to need a large communications and GOTV campaign to counter this smear campaign.

As Brad himself said on DailyKos last week, stop laughing and start fighting.

the people of his district should hear the truth about this slime.  I don't think most of them would approve.

    •  Indeed they wouldn't (0+ / 0-)

Robinson's a total emabaressment to everyone. Even some Freepers are running away from him.

He tried to paint his Republican primary opponent in 04, Virginia Fox as a liberal. Fox just might be the craziest of a very crazy REpublican freshman class. To think of someone worse than her is unfthomable but its true, Vernon Robinson's probably the scariest Republican that's taken seriously in these days.

Big slick packet financed by .....I wonder?  I just don't know how to respond to this crap.  On the one hand you don't want to ignore it ala Swiftboat, on the other hand, does one really want to respond with a detailed denial, or explanation?  Or, as Tom Harkin once said, should we,"Always attack, never defend"?

  •  it's gonna work (3+ / 0-)

it's gonna work too, because let's face it, people can be stupid.

and let's face it, people on this site have a wide range of opinions and any one of them can be paired up with another to make someone look bad.

and markos needs to get a new publicity photo out there. ;-) Wasn't it Oscar Wilde who said "I don't care what they say about me so long as they spell my name right?"

perhaps in the post literate era it should be changed to getting one's photo right.

Wasn't that photo completely ridiculous? Although this letter was the most humorous to those of us who know the truth, the rest of the packet was really scary.

Other than the letter about Markos, there was a letter telling oh how great Robinson was (but was nice enough to leave out his voting record) and two whole pages about Brad's voting record (which made him look really bad).

I showed it to a friend and asked him if he didn't know anything about either candidate, would he vote for Brad Miller after reading this.  His answer was no. Luckily, he's not in his district!

I already went through the letter about Markos on my blog if anyone is interested.

I hope you're reading this Brad, because you really need to get some kind of response out about this.

  •  I couldn't help notice poor Liddy Dole's (0+ / 0-)

tirade against Dkos in the letter. "The most hateful, vitriolic, and extremeist leftwing activists" activists in the Democratic party is how she described us.
Hmmmm, I guess when the chairman of the NRSC is getting owned in every why possible, its logical to take out your anger on one of the most successful fundraising sources for Democrats. If Dole was a functioning human being, she would have someone other than Katherine Harris running in Florida, that's for sure.
Fuck Dole and Robinson. They're two in the same to me.

  •  can't let this pass.... (0+ / 0-)

this is North Carolina, everyone!  I suspect there may be a tendency to believe whatever one wants in order to vote for someone this hateful.  Sorry N. Carolinians, but that's more or less how I see a district that votes for "the craziest of the wingnuts in the Republican freshman class".

    IS there any legal recourse??

    •  so you're going to label us all idiots (0+ / 0-)

because of the few crazy people who actually voted for Robinson in the primary? Most people vote for the name that they recognize and since he has had so much airtime, they probably only recognized his name.

By the way, one of his opponents in the primary feels so strongly against Vernon that he not only has decided to support Brad, he is changing his political party!

      •  I knew I'd get flamed.... (0+ / 0-)

but I am just stating what my perceptions were about a state where Jesse Helms was elected again and again, using not all that dissimilar tactics.

Actually, the few crazy people I was referring to were the ones who voted for this Virginia Fox person (apparently in a different district, though).

        •  I'm not flaming you (0+ / 0-)

I just get so aggrevated when people say bad things about my state. NC has been a red state for a long time but is well on its way to being a blue one. We are working very hard to make that come true. If you're really interested, check out BlueNC.

Virginia Foxx is from NC-5.  She ran against Vernon Robinson and, after a run off, beat him in the primary.  The people in that district were very familiar with Vernon and had already experienced his "leadership" on the Winston Salem City Council.

Unfortunately, he is now running in the 13th district and the people here don't know him as well. He has been running radio and tv ads for a while now.  His opponents didn't do very much at all (as far as I know).  Vernon probably got the majority of his votes because of name recognition.

The key for democrats to win back any of the southern states is for both groups to keep an open mind about the other. I'm not saying that you have (although your "joke" about people from NC makes me wonder), but many people on this site don't seem to even want to try to win back the southern states, or to even remember those of us here that vote Dem.  Comments (like yours) can ostracize (spelling) members of this community who are from NC and we need to keep all the ones we can get.

On the other hand, the view held here in the south that Dems are the "yankee elite" needs to be dispelled.  Many, many times southerners get the impression that the rest of the country looks down their noses at us and it is very frustrating.

Thanks for letting me rant by the way!

That's 'The War of Northern Agression' to you, Yankee.  (j/k)
Seriously, though, NC is relatively purple, at least locally.  We've got a sizable (D) delegation in congress, we used to have a (D) Senator (and we may again come '08 - Dole hasn't exactly distinguished herself, and Easley is term limited out of the Governorship), and we've had a very long line of (D) Governors.  Also, the state congress is held by the Dems.
I was honestly rather offended by how little time the Kerry campaign spent here.  Edwards made a grand total of two campaign stops in his home state, iirc.  That's pathetic.  In the end, despite the complete lack of effort by Kerry, it ended up going for Bush by 56%, one the smallest margins of the Southern states, behind only Florida, Arkansas, and Virginia.

  •  That photo... (0+ / 0-)

Finally purchased a copy of Crashing the Gates tonight.  Flipped to the back cover, and saw a rather familiar image.
Looks like Vernon Robinson is using a photograph of Markos taken by Kid Oakland.
I somehow doubt he got permission.
