CNN is saying Mr. Bush will make remarks on the NSA's collection of phone records in 15 minutes. I'll live-blog it (with a little help from my friends, I hope) for those of you stuck in TV-less offices.
In the mean time if you'd like to get this into the rec list, have at it ... and go ahead and speculate on how hard he's gonna spin ... and what he's gonna have to say.
UPDATE FIRST SENTENCE mentions September the 11th ... then goes on about "terrorist surveillance" ... so far has not once mentioned this USA Today report ...
UPDATE Well that was nothing. All he said was we're eavesdropping on Al Queda, not Americans. Didn't say one gaddamn word about collecting domestic phone records, which is what the USA Today story said is happening. Not One Gad Damned Word. Ugh.
He did, however, complain about the leak of the story.
UpdateMy amateur analysis after the flip.
He knows he's in trouble. He tried to conflate this with the "terrorist surveillance program" (ie, warrantless spying), which he still thinks he can defend, but which is totally separate.
For this records-gathering program, he has no defense, so he didn't offer one. He's caught, he knows it, and he's pissed.
Hayden is done.
