Some interesting new flaws have been found in the new Diebold touchscreen voting machines.
In response, Pennsylvania has sequestered all their machines and California is invoking emergency procedures.
One glaring security flaw is that the machines come with security seals so that nobody can tamper with their innards. But it only takes a Phillips screwdriver to remove the back of the machine and replace it with all seals intact and no evidence that the machine has been opened.
More serious security flaws have been located also. A redacted version of the new Harri Hursti report released today is available in pdf format at http://www.blackboxvoting.org/...
For those of you who still think that this is just crackpot conspiracy theory, please try telling that to election officials in states that use or were planning to use the Diebold touchscreen machines. They'll be exceedingly grateful to hear it.
I'm not sure what will happen next. Probably states will attempt to continue to use Diebold optical scanners and GEMS central tabulators instead of touchscreens where possible, although these also have serious security flaws.
If, however, the perfect storm of election integrity issues, corporate-party corruption scandals, resistance by the immigrant community (most of whom are either eligible to vote or have friends and relatives here who are), the peace movement, and public outrage over gas prices and the economy should come together in time for the November elections, there could be some surprises.
