It's a big problem. And Democrats are not immune at all. Just more adept at cognitive dissonance. Democrats get to feel morally superior because there are Republicans.
When I write about race issues, I give particular affront. Partly because of my faults. But partly because of the defensiveness and, in my view, obtuseness of many here. I won't repeat the arguments. I will merely provide links to some diaries that exemplify the problem - here at daily kos, in the Democratic Party, and in our society.
Joe Klein and the CBC, Addressing Racism and Sexism in Our Society, Dean Diversifies the DNC, A Response, NYC Mayoral Race, Daily Kos RACE War, Perceptions and Reality. These threads are just a few of the many examples of the severe disconnect even here. Imagine Society at large.
Many who comment on the issue use me as their scapegoat for their angry views. And while I take full responsibility for many times shedding more heat than light on the issue, I think there is much more to it than that. I think personal perspectives are the most powerful driver of reactions on this issue.
I hope that someone less flammable than me will take up the issue. But, to be quite frank about it, I don't see many that step up to the issue, either from disinterest or for fear of controversy. Please, someone, take up the call to discuss this issue. It is eating us up and we are not talking about it. It concerns me greatly.
No doubt this very diary will offend many. So be it.
