Although preceding the now
discredited news story about the Iranian law allegedly envisaging the adoption of color schemes to publicly identify religious minorities, a
real news item appears (for the most part) to have passed under the radar screen regarding controversial
declarations by Colombian President Alvaro Uribe.
The BBC cites Senator Arlen Specter as saying,
President Uribe said he would consider having Colombian workers have microchips implanted into their bodies before they are permitted to enter the United States to work on a seasonal basis.
Now there is something that smacks of fascism! ... and it comes from a close US "ally" in Latin America! I was surprised to learn (apparently I am just naïve) that this is not a new idea and may not even be originally Uribe's, although that he is apparently willing to endorse it is enough evidence to me of his true intent. According to a recent posting by the
Drudge Retort, the so-called subcutaneous Radio Frequency Identification tag (RFID) is promoted actively by a company called the VeriChip Corporation:
Scott Silverman, Chairman of the Board of VeriChip Corporation, has alarmed civil libertarians by promoting the company's subcutaneous human tracking device as a way to identify immigrants and guest workers. He appeared on the Fox News Channel earlier this week, the morning after President Bush called for high-tech measures to clamp down on Mexican immigrants.
I seriously doubt the proponents of these tracking devices for migration workers have any medical purposes in mind.
