Any kossacks know about this citizenship thing?
One of the group of refugees I work with is coming up on 4.5 years here and need to get their citizenship stuff cleared away soon! (They have until their fifth year)
Here's the problem: they can't afford to hire someone to help them so they're stuck with me, and I've never helped anyone do this before. I've figured out that they have to know the answers to the 96 questions at the citizenship website.
Here's another problem: three of these women do NOT speak English well. They will probably never speak English well. None of them went to school past fourth grade. They are hardly literate in their language so we work on memorizing the dang 96 questions by repetition.
It's not happening.
We get five questions memorized and next time we meet--it's as if they've never heard the five questions before.
So what do we do? Does anyone know how hard it is to get an excuse? A note from a doctor? It's clear the ladies are suffering from PTSD. Okay, that's my non-professional diagnosis after seeing their list of medications and hearing about their war experiences. (And after watching them occasionally burst into sobs and rock back and forth).
I hope to find out if I can just work on helping them maybe memorize the shorter list of 25 questions, even though they're all under the age of 65 and haven't been here that long.
And will they really have to be able to write those flipping sentences??????
