Are you sick and tired of listening to me complain about the Inter-County Connector yet? Well, if you aren't then you'll love this column from Marc Fisher of the Washington Post. If you are sick and tired, then check out what he has to say. He is very concise and right on point about what is so wrong about this project.
What about the politics of it however?
The truth to the matter is that the ICC is unfortunately a bi-partisan disaster. All three major party candidates for governor support building this road. Both Duncan and Ehrlich are unapologetic. Ehrlich just hates trees and anything to do with the environment. Duncan on the other hand loves developers (especially the money that flows to his campaign coffers from their pockets). O'Malley tries to soften the blow of the ICC by stating that while even though he 100% supports the ICC, he also supports developing public transit options in addition to the road.
In a recent editorial by the WaPo, they made the erroneous comment that "weak-kneed" politicians kept stalling on building the road. "Weak-kneed"? The last state politician to shut down this environmental abomination was Parris Glendening. Now, say what you will about his personal morals, but this man did more to stop the degradation of the Bay, and stop sprawl in Maryland than any of the current candidates propose to do for Maryland should they be elected in November. You would hope that the Democrats in the race would be willing to learn from Glendening's legacy and be willing to carry it forward. But I guess not. I guess it is more important to suck up to your developer buddies than to do what is right for Maryland.
