Two stories in last week's news provide an example of how religious-right groups use the separation of church and state to defend themselves while at the same time claiming such a separation doesn't exist.
* God took center stage at the Republican Party of Texas convention in San Antonio this weekend. State Republicans passed a 2006 party platform that again declares "America is a Christian nation" and charges that separation of church and state is a "myth" not supported by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
* An NCAA investigation has uncovered cases of abuse and fraud in academic standards at some private, nontraditional high schools, an association official said Friday. As many of the schools are religiously affiliated, leaders of those schools are claiming protection under the separation of church and state.
