I can't believe that Bush & congressional war-hawks are ready to say "Fine, whatever" to an amnesty in Iraq, but can't tolerate the concept for hard-working, long-residing undocumented immigrants in the US. How is it forgiveable to blow up US troops, behead political rivals, and sabotage civilian electricity and water supplies, but not forgiveable to speak Spanish in San Diego?
Sure, I can understand that the war-mongers want to support Iraqi government, hurry to declare that all's well, "they are standing up," before troops start coming home. An amnesty might indeed be a necessary pre-condition for ending the multi-factional civil war.
But does the GOP not grasp how heart-breaking and insulting this is to the 12 million here at home who were so recently scapegoated as deportable felons? Aren't campaign ads now being prepared for November that will equate citizenship-advocacy with ooh-so-dangerous "amnesty for lawbreakers"?
What about the immigrants who serve in our armed forces & still can't claim citizenship for themselves or for family members? How much personal injustice are they to swallow, while Amnesty for Insurgents is rubbed in their battle-weary faces? Come on, Dems, make this a talking point NOW, before the moment is lost!
