In another attack on public education, radical Christians have sought to ban books in Wake County, NC.
Today from the News & Observer
The reading issue came up in April when some parents and Called2Action, a local Christian activist group, complained to the school board about students being required to read three books -- "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker, "Beloved" by Toni Morrison and "The Chocolate War" by Robert Cormier.
The parents objected to what they called the "vulgar and sexually explicit language" in the books and said families should have been warned about them.
I tend to agree with this statement:
"It's an insult to teachers to require them to do this," said Sharon Winzeler, co-chairwoman of the English department at Broughton High School in Raleigh. "You rely on us to be professionals."
I find it pathetic that radical Christians with no faith in their parenting skills, their children, or professional teachers find it necessary to be contacted before their children are exposed to different points of view. Faith is the essential proponent of Christianity, yet these radicals seem to only have faith in their vision of God and the Republican National Committee.
We need to have faith in our teachers. They are highly educated professional who know what they are doing.
We need to have faith in our children. As God gave us free will, we should give our children the same. Provide them with the tools and guidance to live a good life, and allow them to amaze us with their abilities.
Instead of trying to ruin public education for everyone, Radical Christians who hate public education should take their RNC donations and invest in private indoctrination facilities for their children and allow my child to have a quality education.
